PATENT FFl CEt ISAAC BROOKE, OF POTTSTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO FIJOYD, WELLS & (30., OF ROYERSFORD, PENNSYLVANIA.
WOOD-STOV SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 610,026, dated August 30,1898.
Application filed April 22, 18971 To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAC BROOKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pottstown, in the county of Montgomery, State of" Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in \Vood-Stoves, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
Myinvention consists of a wood-stove which is constructed of a sheet-iron body, a cast metallic base with an upwardly-projecting of the same and the vertical limbs of the bat-' tens, so that while provision is made for permitting the expansion of the body the joint between the body and flange of the base is tightly closed and air is prevented from entering thereat, the means provided for connect ing the top, body, and base also serving to connect the battens with the latter.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view, partly broken away, of a stove embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a horizontal section thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a stove more especially designed for burning wood, the same having a sheet-iron body B, having an oval form, and a-castdron base 0, the lower end of said body resting on said base within the outer flange O of the latter.
I-Ieretofore when a stove of the kind is in use the joint between the body and base opens, especially on the long sides of the same,
which is objectionable when it is desired to deaden the fire.
employ the battens D, which consist of segmental pieces of metal, preferably cast-iron, angular in cross-section, placed on the base In order to prevent this, I
semi No. 633,211. (No model.)
and embracing at opposite places the inner side of the bodyabout its bottom edge on its long sides, their vertical'limbs being pressed firmly against said places and there screwed or otherwise fastened by their horizontal limbs to the base, by which provision a tight joint is formed between the contiguous parts, thus preventing the entrance of air thereat.
In practice as the curves of the ends of the body are short or arched to a greater extent than the sides, the curves of the latter being long, said ends are vastly stiffened and so resist the opening of joints thereat, whereby battens are not placed at said ends.
'A'flue leads from above the damper F to the lower part of the stove. It is formed by the side of the body and the curved plate E, having flanges O projecting from its side. It is secured in place by rivets passing through said flanges into the body in the usual manner. In the lower end of the plate an opening G is formed that connects the flue with the interior of the stove.
The bolts H are passed through openings in the base and in the battens as additional fastenings for the latter. They extend to the cap and are secured thereto in the usual manner and serve to hold the base, body, and cap together.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A wood-stove consisting of an oval body, an oval base onwhich said body rests, a flange around the rim of said base, battens of angular form on the opposite long sides of said base, having their horizontal limbs secured to said base and their vertical limbs bearing against the inner side of the lower end portion of said body, said portion resting freely between the flange of the base and the vertical limbs of thebattens.
. 2. I A wood-stove consisting of an oval body, an oval base on which said body rests, aflange around the rim of said base, battens of angu lar form on the opposite long sides of said base, having their horizontal limbs secured to said base and their vertical limbs bearing pass through the battens and base and seagainst the inner side of the lower end portion cured to the latter. of said bod said ortion restin freel between the fiztnge of the base and the ve tical ISAAC BROOKE 5 limbs of the battens, said battens being also itnesses:
secured to the base by the bolts which are I. H. FILLMAN, connected with the top plate of the body and l A. J. BERNHART.
