I(No Model.)
Patented May 28, 1895Y YATENT Fries.
ERNEST FINCH, OF SALINEVILLE, OHIO.
`civ-HM N EY-To P.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 540,018, dated May 28, 1895.`
Application led November 13| 1894. Serial No. 528,652. (No model.)
iro m53 whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, ERNESTV FINOH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salineville, in the county of ColumbianaJ and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Chimney-Top, of which the folowing is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in chimney tops.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of chimney tops,
and to provide a simple and inexpensive one, in which the outside air will not be permitted to choke or lessen the draft, and from which water willbe eectively excluded, and be prevented from dripping from the cap or extreme upper end of the top into the side openings.
The invention consists in the construction and novel'combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated.
in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a chimney-top constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a central vertical sectional view. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of one corner of the upper portion of the top, illustrating the construction of the drainopenings and the flanges or shields.
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the draw- 1ngs.
The chimney top consists of an outer casing 3 and an inner imperforate lining or section 4, forming, in use, acontinuation of the chimney proper, and terminating near the center of the outer casing. The inner and the outer casings form au intervening air space, and the outer casing is provided at its corners with openings 5, for the escape of air, to prevent any liability of the draft becoming choked, or in any wise lessened, by decreasing the capacity of the flue, formed by the chimney and the inner lining 4, for the products of combustion, by permitting a portion of the outside air entering the said flue.
The intermediate space between the lining and the outer casing is closed at the bottom of the openings 5, by means of horizontally disposed rectangularr flanges connecting the inner lining with the outer casing.
The upper portion of the chimney top is tapering, and is provided at each side with an opening V6, located between corner posts 7 which support a tapering or pyramidal cap 8 at the upper terminus of the outer casing, to close the upper end of the chimney top to the extent shown. The tapering or pyramidal cap is provided at its base with a surrounding vertically disposed flange 9, forming a gutter for the collection of moisture; and the gutter is provided at the corners with drain openings lO, for the escaperof the water collecting in the gutters.
In order to prevent the water, which escapes the drain openings 10, from entering the openings 6, by being blown into them, or otherwise, outward extendingl vertically disposed flanges 12 are provided. The flanges 12 are arranged in pairs at each corner post, and extend outward from the inner faces of the same, and direct the water flowing through the drain openings below the side openings 6;
It will be seen that the chimney top is exceedinglyY simple and inexpensive in construction, and that it effectually excludes water from the chimney openings 6. It will also be apparent that the draft of the iue is not chokedor decreased by the outside air.
minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any ot the advantages of this invention.
l. A chimney top, comprising a casingfprolvided with upward extending supports or the openings of the casing to exclude water from the openings, substantially as described. 2. A chimney top,comprising an outer casing I Changes in the form, proportion, and the i ICO posts or supports with drain openings, and the vertical flanges or shields arranged in i 5 pairs at the posts or supports to exclude Water from the side openings, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in 2o the presence of two Witnesses.
ERNEST FINCI-l. Witnesses:
P. M. ASHFORD, A. W. MYERS.
