ATTACHMENT FOR CHIMNEYS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 498,398, dated May 30, 1893. Application filed I'ebruary 6, 1893- Serial No. 461,166. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that 1, RICHARD B. HOLMES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marcus, in the county of Cherokee and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Attachment for Chimneys, of which the following is a specification.
Theinvention relates to improvements in attachments for chimneys.
The object of the present invention is to provide for chimneys a simple and'comparatively inexpensive attachment, which will enable aV stove-pipe to be readily and securely fitted to the chimney, and which will permit soot, water occasioned by heavy rains and other accumulation tobe readily removed from the chimney to avoid injury to walls and to prevent carpets and doors from being stained.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claim hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a chimney attachment constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of a chimney having an attachment embodying the invention.

l designates a 1ectangularcasin g having an open front and top receiving a removable soot-pan 2, and having mounted upon it a stove-pipe thimble 3, adapted to receive a stove-pipe 4 in the usual manner.
The casing l and the stove-pipe thimble 8, are constructed of suitable metal; the former is provided at its front with an ornamental rectangular flange 5 adapted to extend around the soot-pan opening of a chimney to provide a neat fit and to present an ornamental and attractive appearance; and the stove-pipe thimble is provided with an annular flange 6, which its around the stove-hole opening of the chimney. The stove pipe thimble is mounted directly on a rectangular block 9 which is supported by a horizontal plate 10 of the casing l.
The removablesoot-pan is arranged beneath the inner terminus of the stove-pipe and is adapted to catch the soot to enable the latter to be readily removed to avoid the same accumulating in large quantities at the base of a chimney; and it also serves as a receptacle for water falling down the chimney, to prevent dampness at the base of a chmney,and' consequent injury to walls and floors.
The stove-pipe thimble is provided at the bottom of its annular ange 6 with an outwardly extending lugV '7, which is provided with a threaded opening to receive a screw 8, and which has its upper face concave to conform to the configuration ot the stove-pipe 4.
The stove-pipe 4 is provided with a perforation to receive the screw 8, and is thereby securely retained in the stove-pipe thimble.
It will be seen that the chimney attachment is simple and comparatively inexpensive in construction, that it is adapted to securely` fasten a stove-pipe in its opening in a chimney, and that it enables soot and other accumulation to be readily removed and prevents the same collecting at the bottom of a chimney.
I desire to be understood that changes of the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages ot' the invention.
An attachment for chimneys comprising a rectangular casing having an open front and top and provided at its top with a transversely disposed horizontal plate 10, a supporting block 9 arranged centrally on the upper face of the plate 10, a removable soot pan arranged in the casing, and astove-pipe thimle mounted on thexblock and provided with means for clamping a stove-pipe, substantially as described.
