W. WRIGHT.
GHIMNEY PROTECTOR. No. 402,641; Patentedlvlay 7. 1889.
' UNITED STATES PATE T OFFICE.
WILLIAM WRIGHT, OF WILLINK, NEW YORK.
CHIMNEY-PROTECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 402,641, dated May '7, 1889.
Application filed June 25, .1836- To all whmn. it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM WRIGHT, of Willink, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Chimney-Protectors, which improvement is fully set forth. in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which v Figure 1 is a side view of a section of a chimney with my improved protector, having the side partly broken away mounted thereon; Fig. 2, a front view of one of the gablesections detached; Fig. 3, a perspective view of one of the external parts of the gables, showing the lugs formed integral therewith. Fig. 4 shows a modification in the shape of the roof. Y
My invention relates to improvements in chimney-protectors, and has for its object the provision of a chimney cap or protector, which can be made and put on the market and adapted to be put in position upon finished chimneys and fastened thereon.
To this end myinvention consists in a castiron body and removable wall-pieces adapted to be secured to the body, so as to embrace the chimney and clasp it firmly, as will be hereinafter described, and then pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents this upper part of an ordinary chimney having thereon my improved protector. This consists of a top or roofing piece, B, preferably a casting forming a single piece having four gables, 0, two of which are in the same horizontal line and at, right angles withthe other two. These gables may be of any pitch desired. On the inner side of the gable I provide lugs D, preferably formed integral with the roofing-piece and having openings therein. WVithin each of these gables I provide suitablevertical wall-pieces, E, also preferably cast, having openings F therein at" suitable places, wherebythe said wall-pieces E maybe attached to the lugs D by means of bolts.
At the upper part of the gable beneath the roofing-piece B, I provide a triangular piece, G, also formed integral with the said roofing piece, with an opening therein to act in the same capacity as the lugs D. The lower part Serial No. 206,191. (No model.)
of this device may have a flange, H, securely attached to both the roof-piece B and vertiover the wall of the chimney A.
The pieces II may, as desired, be formed of sheet metal or tin, and need not necessarily be cast, though sometimes I find it convenient to cast them integral, either with the roofingpiece B or the vertical gable-pieces E. Each of the gable-pieces E is provided with a central opening, I, of suitable size for the passage of the smoke from the chimney.
ing-piece is rested on the top of the chimney and the wall-pieces are then attached to the same, being bolted tightly thereto, so as to be drawn up closely against the chimney and clasp the same, thereby firmly securing the protector in position.
The modification shown in Fig. 4 relates to curving the upper part of the roofing-piece instead of making it angled, while the lower part is so arranged or disposed as to flare outwardly. There is no change, however, in the essential idea above presented.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new is- 1. A chimn ey-protector comprising the roofing-piece cast in a single piece, and the wallpieces attachable thereto by means substantially as shown, whereby they are adjustable, so as to fit against and firmly embrace the chimney and secure the protector in position, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the roof-piece B, having the right-angled gables 0 formed integrally therewith in a single piece of castiron, of the wall-pieces E, provided with the openings I and removably secured in the gables by means, substantially as shown, whereby said wall-pieces are adjustable, so as to fit against and firmly embrace the chimney, as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, this 29th day of April, 1886, in the presence of witnesses.
WILLIAM WRIGHT.
