CHIMNEY ATTACHMENT OR COWL.

SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent 0. 514,252, dated February 6, 1894. Application filed October 10, 1893- Serial No. 187,773. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, GEORGE BLANKLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Philadelphia, in the county of'PhiladeL phia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Chimney Attachments or Oowls, of which the following is a specification.

The principal objects of my present invention are, first, to provide a simple, durable, compact, reliable, and comparatively inexpensive attachment or cowl for chimneys, ventilators, or other shafts, and, second, to construct, arrange, and combine the component parts of the cowl or attachment for operation in such manner thatagood strong upward draft through, and a positive'discharge from the chimney or shaft are insured, while, at the same time, the chimney or shaft is protected from downward drafts or currents of air due to the prevailing winds or to the proximity of high buildings or walls.

My invention consists of the improvements in chimney attachments or cowls hereinafter fully described and particularly referred to in the claims.

The nature, characteristic features, and scope of my invention will be more fully understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part hereof and in which- Figure 1, is a side elevational view of a chimney attachment or cowl embodying features of my invention, and Fig. 2, is a transverse sectional View of the same illustrating the detail construction and arrangement of its parts.

In the drawings, 1, is a base ring adapted for attachment to the upper portion of the chimney or ventilator shaft.

2, is a skirt provided with openings or windows 3, (of which four are illustrated in the drawings) and adapted to encircle the base ring 1, in such manner that an annular passage 4, is afforded between the upper part of the base ring 1, and the lower part of the skirt 2, while at the same time its lower portion extends below the top of the base ring 1, and thus protects the interior of the base ring from downward drafts due to direct blasts of air or gusts of wind.

5, are arms riveted or otherwise attached at their respective extremities to the base ring 1, and to the skirt 2, in order to support the latter and permit of the free ingress of the exterior air through the annular passage 4,and of its free upward circulation through the skirt 2.

6, are Wedge-like shields disposed in front of each of the windows 3, and having only their lower portions open in order to afford 6o inlets,as at 7, for the entrance of exterior air, which also circulates upward through the skirt 2. These shields not only'induce the entrance of exterior air through the passages 7, but also protect the interior of the device from downward drafts due to direct blasts of air or gusts of wind.

8, is an imperforate cap provided with a depending flange 9, adapted to encircle and extend level with or slightly below the upper open part or discharge end of the cylindrical top ring 10, attached to or formed integral with the uppermost portion of the skirt 2. This cap 8, is also provided with depending legs 11, that extend into the top ring 10, and are held to place between the curved walls of the ring 10, and a sleeve 12, inserted and fitted therein.

The mode of operation of the hereinabove described device is as follows: The depend- 8o ing flange 9, wedge-like shields 6, and skirt 2, protect the chimney or shaft from downward drafts due to direct blasts of air or gusts of wind. However, air entering in an upward direction through the annular passage 4, inlet passages 7, and windows 3, gives rise to an upward current or circulation through the cowl or attachment, which causes the contents of the shaft or chimney to be drawn or sucked upward through the cowl or attachment and discharged out of the upper open end of its cylindrical top ring 10, and thence out into the air beneath the flange 9, of its cap 8.

Having thus described the nature, objects, and characteristic features of my invention, 5 what I claim as new, and desire to secure by LettersPatent, is..-

1. A chimney attachment or cowl comprising, base and top rings, an upwardly tapering skirt provided with windows and depending I00 below the top of the base ring to form an annular air inlet, wedge-like shields open at their bases and overlying said windows, and a cap provided with a depending imperforate flange constituting together with the upper rim of the top rim an annular discharge opening, substantially as described.

2. A chimney attachment or cowl comprising, base and top rings, a skirt tapering upwardly to the base of the top ring and depending below the top of the base ring to form an annular air inlet, windows in said skirt extending above and below the top of the base ring, wedge-like shields open at their bases and overlying said windows, a cap provided with a depending flange constituting with the upper rim of the top ring an annular discharge opening, substantially as described.

A chimney attachment or cowl coinprising, a base ring, an upwardly tapering skirt provided with windows and depending below the top of the base ring to form an annular inlet, arms interposed between the lower portion of the skirt and base ring, wedge-like shields covering said windows and having air inlets at their lower ends, an imperforate top ring extending upward from said skirt,a cap having an imperforate flange forming together with the top rim'of the top ring an annular discharge opening, and legs interposed between said cap and top ring, substantially as described.

4:. A chimney attachment or cowl comprising, a base ring, a skirt provided with windows and depending below the top of the base ring toform an annular air inlet, arms interposed between the skirt and base ring, wedgelike shields having open bases and disposed opposite said windows and the top of the base ring, a top ring superposed on the skirt, a flanged cap provided with depending legs, and a sleeve inserted in the top ring and adapted to expand said legs into engagement with the top ring, substantially as described.
