EDWIN A. DAVIS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CHIMNEY-COWL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 2, 1906.
Application filed February 19,1906. Serial No. 301,718.
To all: whmn it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWIN A. DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chimney-'Cowls, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to chimney-cowls; and the object thereof is to provide an im proved device of this class which may be connected with or mounted on any chimney and which will effectually serve to prevent back draft through the chimney, and also to produce a constant and steady draft therethrough.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters, said drawing being a central vertical section of my improved chimney-cowl and showing the method of its operation.
In the drawing forming part of this specification I have shown at a the top portion of a chimney, and in the practice of my invention I provide a chimney-cowl comprising a base casing b, which may be either circular or angular in cross-section, but which is preferably circular in cross-section and within the bottom portion of which is concentrically placed a supplemental casing or flue member 0, which corresponds with and is adapted to form a continuation of the flue a of the chimney.
The casing b is provided with an inwardlyinclined top member d, with which is connected an auxiliary flue member e, which is substantially of the same dimensions in crosssection as the supplemental casing or flue member 0, and connected with the top of the supplemental casing or flue member 0 by means of supports 0 is an inverted conical deflector j, which is greater in diameter than the supplemental casing or flue member 0, and also greater in diameter than the auxiliary flue member 6.
The auxiliary flue member 6 is provided at its top with an annular deflecting-collar g, and supported over said auxiliary flue member by means of supports h is a conical deflector i, which is greater in diameter than the auxiliary flue member and which is preferably of the same diameter as the collar g,
and said collar g is triangular in cross-section, both the top and bottom walls thereof being inclined, one upwardly and the other downwardly.
In the form of construction shown the main bottom casing b is provided with a bottom b with which the supplemental casing or flue member 0 is connected, and all the parts of the device, permanently connected, constitute a single instrumentality for the purpose specified which may be placed on or secured to the chimney in any desired man ner, and in practice the supplemental casing or flue member 0 is preferably made so as to extend downwardly a short distance into the chimney.
In the operation of this device the hot gases and escaping products of combustion pass upwardly through the chimney cowl and out through the top thereof, as indicated by the arrows x, and the shape of the conical deflector i and of the collar 9 are such as to facilitate this operation, and the collar 9 also serves to deflect Wind-currents, as indicated by the arrows y, and to prevent the same from entering the chimney-cowl and pass downwardly therethrough, in which latter operation the shape of the inverted conical deflector f and the dimensions thereof as compared with the dimensions of the supplemental casing or flue member 0 and the maincasing 6, together with the top (1 of said main casing, also aid.
It will be understood, of course, that my improved chimney-cowl may be made of any desired size; but in the construction thereof the relative sizes of the separate parts as herein shown and described should be maintained.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A chimney-cowl, comprising a main bottom casing having an inwardly and upwardly inclined top, a supplemental casing or flue member placed in the bottom of the main casing and adapted to communicate with the chimney-flue, an inverted conical deflector supported over the supplemental casin or flue member and of greater diameter t an said member, an auxiliary flue member connected with the top of the main casing and forming a continuation thereof, a deflectingcollar connected with the top of the auxiliary flue member, and a conical deflector supported over the auxiliary flue member and the diameter of which is greater than said member, substantially as shown and described.
27 A chimney-cowl comprising a main, bottom, closed casing having an inwardly and upwardly inclined top, an auxiliary flue member connected with the top of the main casing and forming a continuation thereof of less dimensions than the main, bottom, closed casing, an annular deflecting-collar connected with the top of the auxiliary flue member and inclosing the same, a conical deflector sup ported over the auxiliary flue member and the diameter of which is greater than that of said member, a supplemental casing or flue member secured concentrically in the bottom of the main, closed, bottom casing and extending upwardly a predetermined distance therein, and an inverted conical deflector supported over the supplemental casing or flue member and of greater diameter than said member.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention 1 have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing Witnesses, this 17th day of February, 1906.
EDWIN A. DAVIS.
