ATTACHMENT FOR APPLICATION TO APPARATUS FOR PRODUCING COMBUSTION.

Be it known that I, PAUL J. SCHLICHT, a citizen of the United States, residing in Summit, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Article of Manufacture, consisting of an Attachment to be Applied to Apparatus for Producing Combustion, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part hereof.
My invention relates to means for carrying out the improved method of producing combustion described in my earlier application, Serial No. 523,782; and its object is to provide an attachment which can be readily applied to any chimney or stack and which, when so applied, will enable my improved method of producing combustion to be carried out in said apparatus, and which can be made as a separate article of manufacture.
My invention consists broadly in a chimney attachment provided with a deflector or other means for causing a current of air to flow downward within a chimney or flue, so as to come in contact with the hot combustion products escaping therefrom.
My invention also consists in a chimney attachment having a wall or partition, which divides the attachment into two fiues, one of said flues being adapted to initiate or introduce a downwardly-movin g current of air and the other flue being adapted to receive or convey an upwardly-moving current of products of combustion, whereby when the attachment is applied to a chimney or stack or other flue through which combustion products are escaping a current of air will be introduced into said chimney or stack or flue and caused to fiow to the place of combustion in contact with the hot combustion products.
My invention also consists in providing such an attachmentwith a wind-guard to protect the entering current of air.
My invention also consists in providing such an attachment with a chimney or stack eX- tender for lengthening the duct or flue through which the products of combustion flow.
My invention also consists in providing such an attachment with a chimney or stack protector for protecting the chimney or stack from the external atmosphere and delivering heated air to the deflector.
My invention also consists in certain other features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
My invention is fully shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective view of one form of my attachment. Fig. 2 shows this attachment applied to a stack. Fig. 3 is a perspective sectional view of an attachment consisting of two tubes, one within the other. Fig. 4 shows this attachment applied to a stack. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a similar attachment provided also with a wind-guard. Fig. 6 is a perspective view, partly in section, of another form of attachment. Fig. 7 is a perspective sectional. view of another form of attachment.
In Fig. 1, A is the attachment. It consists of a tube 1) designed to operate as a deflector and of connecting devices 0, and is adapted to be applied to a chimney or stack or other flue, and to be readily fastened to or connected with the same in such a way as to cause a current of air to fiow downward within the chimney or stack or flue to the place of combustion in contact with the products of combustion escaping therefrom. The tube 1) is made of such a size as to enter the top of the chimney or stack for which it is adapted and to leave the proper space or passage between it and the wall of the chimney or stack for the entering current of air. The connecting devices 0 are fastened to the tube 1) at such a point as to hold the tube in proper position in the chimney or stack, making it extend above as well as below the top thereof. They are made in the form of hooks to catch upon the top of the chimney or stack and support the deflector firmly in its proper place.
In Fig. 2 the attachment is shown as applied to a stack d. If desired, the devices 0 can be bolted to the stack. The devices a are made of such a size and so arranged as to fit the top of the chimney or stack for which the attachment is adapted, and when applied thereto to bring the deflector into its proper position relatively to the chimney or stack. In practice the attachment will be made in a number of regular or standard sizes, from which the proper size can be selected for any particular chimney or stack.
The particular form of the deflector and of the connecting devices can be greatly varied without departing from my invention.
\Vhen applied to a chimney or stack, the attachment causes a current of air to enter the chimney or stack and flow to the place of combustion in contact with the escaping products of combustion, and thus carries out the method of producing combustion described and claimed in my earlier application above referred to, and secures the advantages resulting therefrom.
The different parts of my improved attachment may be made of any suitable material.
My invention constitutes a new and separate article of manufacture which can be made economically in large quantities and of a great variety of sizes and shapes, so as to provide a cheap and ready means for adapting any chimney or stack to operate according to the principles of my improved method which I have described and claimed in my earlier application. These attachments can be easily applied to any combustion apparatus. The size and character of the chimney or stack being known, the proper size and variety of attachment can be furnished and can be applied by the user. The different parts of the attachment are already properly adjusted as to size and position in reference to one another, so that all the user has to do is to bolt or otherwise fasten the connecting devices to the chimney or stack, and the different parts of the attachment will thereby be brought into proper position.
In Fig. 3, A is the attachment. It consists of a tube c, which is adapted to rest upon the top of the chimney or stack orflue, anda second tube, 1), within and smaller in diameter than the tube c and extending above and below the top of the outer tube, 0, and of supporting devices f for connecting the inner tube with the outer tube and supporting the inner tube in its proper relative position, and of the connecting device 9 for connecting the attachment A to the stack 61. As already explained in connection with the device of Fig. 1, this attachment is adapted to be applied to a chimney or stack or other flue and to be readily fastened to or connected with the same in such a way as to cause a current of air to flow downward within the chimney or stack or flue to the place of combustion in contact with the products of combustion escaping therefrom, or, in other words, is adapted when so applied to a chimney or stack to carry out the method of producing combustion described in my earlier application. The tube 1) is designed to operate as a deflectorand is made of such a size as to leave the proper passage between itself and the outer tube, e. Anysuitable form of supporting devices may be used for fastening the inner and outer tubes together. In Fig. 3 these devices are shown as angle-irons having the inner end bolted to the tube 1) and the outer end bolted to the tube e. The tube 6 is made of such a size as to fit the top of the chimney or flue for which it is adapted.
Any suitable form of connecting device may be used for fastening or connecting the at tachment A to the chimney or stack. In Fi 3 a ring or collar 9 is shown bolted to the lower end of the tube 6 and of such a size as to slip upon the top of the chimney or stack, so that it can be bolted to the latter. The connecting device g is adapted to hold the tube 6 in its proper position relatively to the chimney or stack, and the supporting devices f are so constructed and arranged as to support the deflector-tube Z) in its proper position relatively to the tube 6.
In Fig. at the attachment is shown as applied to the stack (Z. \Vhen this attachment is applied to a chimney or stack it causes a current of air to pass down through the passage between the tubes 1) and c and to flow downwardly to the place of combustion, while the combustion products are caused to flow through the tube 11. It will thus be seen that the tube 1) acts as a wall or partition dividing the attachment into two iiues, one of said ues being adapted to initiate a downwardlymoving air-current and the other being adapted to receive and convey an upwardlymoving current of the products of combustion.

It consists of a tube 1) designed to operate as a deflector, a wind-guard i, a stack-extender 7a, a con necting device 9 for connecting the attachment to the stack, and braces or supports Z extending from the connecting device g to the lower edge of the wind-guard. The attachment is shown as applied to the chimney or stack (1. In this form of device the deflector b is fastened directly to the top of the wind-guard i by means of a collar or ring inclosing the tube 1) and bolted to the same. The upper end of the Wind-guard is bolted to this ring or collar. The stack-extender k is made in the form of a tube, being an extension of the tube Z) above the wind-guard. The ring or collar g is adapted to be slipped down upon the upper end of the stack and is fastened in place at sucha point as will properly regulate the position of the attachment with reference to the top of the stack. It is shown as bolted to the stack. When this device is applied to a chimney or stack it causes a downward current of air to be introduced into the stack between the deflectorb and the wall of the stack, and to flow downward so as to come into contact with the products of combustion, and it causes the current of combustion products to flow through the tube Z) and to escape through the stack-extenderk. This extender serves to lengthen the passage or duct through which the products of combustion escape. The wind-guard i protects the entering current of air.
In Fig. 7, A is the attachment. It is shown as applied to a chimney or stack d. sists of the tube 12 designed to operate as a deflector, the connecting devices a, the stackextender is, the wind-guard m, and the chimneyor stack protector n. In this form of my attachment the deflector 19 operates to introduce a downwardly-moving current of air and to cause it to flow to the place of combustion in contact with the products of combustion escaping therefrom, the wind-guard operates to protect this entering current of air from the wind, the stack-extender lengthens the flue or duct through which the products of combustion flow, and the stack protector serves both to protect the stack from the external atmosphere and at the same time to cause the feed-air to be heated on its way to the deflector b. This stack-protector in the form shown is a continuation of the windguard m. It consists of a tube of larger dimensions than the stack surrounding'the latter, so as to form an air-passage between it and the stack. The size of this stack-protector may be varied according to circumstances, and will naturally be regulated with reference to the size of the air-passage between the deflectorb and the stack. The connecting devices 0 are so constructed and arranged as to slip upon the top of the stack and to support the different parts of the attachment in their proper positions relatively to the stack.

I do not herein claim a deflector, windguard, stack -protector, and air-heater or stack-extender, in combination with a stack, as such combinations have respectively been made the subjects of my other applications,

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. As a new article of manufacture, a chimney attachment provided with means for causing a current of air to flow downward within a chimney or flue, substantially as set forth.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a chimney attachment provided with a deflector for initiating a downwardly-moving current of air within a chimney or flue, substantially as set forth.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a chimney attachment having a wall which divides the same into two flues, one of said fines being adapted to initiate a downwardly-moving air-current, and the other flue being adapted to receive an upwardly-moving current of products ofcombustion, substantially as set forth.
4. As a new article of manufacture, achimney attachment provided with a deflector for initiating a downwardly-moving current of air within a chimney or flue, and a windguard for protecting said current from the wind, substantially as set forth.
5. As a new article of manufacture, a chimney attachment provided with a deflector for 575,485, 575,486, and
initiating a downwardly-moving current of air within a chimney or flue, and a windguard for protecting said current from the wind, and a chimney-extender, substantially as set forth.
6. As a new article of manufacture, a chimney attachment provided with a deflector for initiating a downwardly-moving current of air within a chimney or flue, and a windguard for protecting said current from the wind, and a chimney or stack protector for protecting the chimney or stack from the external atmosphere and delivering heated air to the deflector, substantially as set forth.
7. As a new article of manufacture, a chimney attachment provided with a deflector for initiating a downwardly-moving current of air within a chimney or flue, a wind-guard for protecting said current from the wind, a chimney or stack protector for protecting the chimney or stack from the external atmosphere and delivering heated air to the deflector, and a chimney or stack extender, substantially as set forth.
8. As a new article of manufacture, a chimney attachment consisting of a tube adapted to rest upon the top of a chimney or flue and a second tube within and smaller in diameter than the first one and extending above the top of the first tube, whereby the said attachment is made to contain a passage for a downwardly-moving current of air, and a passage for an upwardly-moving current of products of combustion, substantially as set forth.
9. As a new article of manufacture, a chimney attachment consisting of a tube adapted to rest upon the top of a chimney or flue and a second tube Within and smaller in diameter than the first one and extending above the top of the first tube, and connecting devices for fastening the attachment to the chimney 0r stack, substantially as set forth.
10. As a new article of manufacture, a chimney attachment consisting of a tube adapted to rest upon the top of a chimney or flue, and a second tube within and smaller in diameter than the first one and extending above the top of the first tube, and a Wind-guard resting upon the top edge of the fi rst-named tube, substantially as set forth.
11. As anew article of manufacture, a chimney attachment consisting of the deflector Z), and connecting devices for attaching it to the chimney or stack, substantially as set forth.
