UNITED STATES PAT NT ()FFIQ WILLIAM E. JOHNSON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN MICA LAMP-CHIMNEYS Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 63,206, dated May 11,1875; application filed April 13, 12575.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. JOHNSON, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mica Lamp-Chimneys; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the. letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction of a mica lamp-chimney, in the manner hereinafter described, as will be more particularly set forth.
In the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a side view of the chimney, and Fig. 2 alongitudinal section.
1n the drawings, A represents the chimney body, made of mica as a substitute for glass. This body may be made of either one piece of mica or of two, and either in tapering form or cylindrical, as may be desirable. The chimney is surrounded at its top and bottom with round metallic bands 0 and E. These bands give shape to the chimney, and are riveted to it. Covering the seam or seams of this chimney, upon its side or sides, are two metallic straps, D D, one portion of said straps running up the outside, and the other portion up the inside. The two portions of the strap are riveted together, and thus securely clamp and hold the mica in shape, and break the joint or joints, as the case may be. To the lower end of this chimney is secured a metallic band, B,
which said band rests upon the burner,'below the light, so as not to obstruct it. This band may be made of mica but I prefer metal, as it is more durable, and will serve a better purpose for holding the chimney in form.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the mica chimney A, metallic top rim E, metallic base-rim B, band 0, and the vertical exterior and interior strips D D, connected together and to the chimney and hands by the rivets a: 00, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 16th day of March, A. D. 1875.
