EDWARD J. DURANT, OF LEBANON, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
IMPROVEMENT IN STOVE-PIPE THIMBLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 128,474, dated July 2, 1872..
' .To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD J. DURANT, of Lebanon, in the county of Grafton and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and Improved Stove-Pipe Thimble, and the combination thereof with an improved cover forthe same; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and clear description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing which forms a portion of this specification Figure 1 being a side view of said thimble combined with its cover; Fig. 2, an elevation showing an inner and an interior view of the same; Fig. 3, a section in the line 00 w of Fig. 2; and Fig. 4, a section of the cover of said thimble detached.
My improved thimble a may be made of metal,'burued clay, or other suitable material. The improvement in said thimble consists in its being so formed as to produce an inwardlyinclining enlargement, b, on the side thereof that is to form the bottom of the thimble; and the improvement in the cover 0 d of said thimble consists in the tubular portion 0 thereof, being so formed as to produce an inwardly-inclining enlargement, e, on one side thereof of such shape as will enable it to pass into the inclined enlargement b in the side of the thimble a, My object in constructing the thimble a and its cover 0 d with inwardly-inclining enlargements of the sides thereof that are to form the bottom portions of the thimble and cover, when they are combined with each and placed in a wall, is to enable them to conduct inwardly and discharge into the flue all the moisture that may condense upon the inner surfaces of said thimble and cover, and thereby prevent the possibility of the escape of any moisture at the front end of the thimble, and the consequent strain and disfigurement of the wall that would thereby be produced. The tubular portion 0 and the fiat circular portion d of the cover of my improved combined stove-pipe thimble and cover may be made of thinly-cast metal, or of tinned plates, or of sheet-iron; or the tubular portion 0 of said cover may be made of sheet-iron, and the head d thereof may be made of tinned plates; and when made of the last-named materials, the joints between the respective parts of the cover may be made fluid-tight by solder or cement. I claim as my invention 1. My improved stove-pipe thimble, con- EDWARD J. DURANT.
