IMPROVEMENT IN STQVE-PIPE THIMBLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 143,973, dated October 28, 1873; application filed May 19, 1873.
'To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VALENTINE Farm, of St. Louis, county of St. Louis and State of Missouri', have invented an Improved Attachment of Stove lipe to Chimney-Flues, of which the following is a specification:
This invention presents a novel and improved manner of attaching stove-pipes to chimney-fines. The object is to avoid smoke, soot, or similar impurities from flue having egress in the room; to avoid the use of nails, wedges, and similar fastenings; to avoid play of thimble or pipe in flue deforming their shape; especially to affix and adapt the thimble to different sizes of flues, secure a complete fitting joint of the parts, and to obtain certain advantages readily apparent. Therefore, the nature of my invention consists, first, in forming the thimble in two sections or parts and the manner of joining same to form a whole thimble, and also to adapt same for packing, transporting, and shipping purposes; secondly, in the improved thimble made to consist of the parts, as will hereinafter more fully appear.

A represents the thimble or short pipe which enters the flue. My improved thimble A consists of two parts, (see Figs. 2, 4,) each formed with an outer flange, a, and inner flange a.
The contiguous or marginal edges of the sectional thimble A, I provide with V-shaped notches a so that when fitted together each edge will overlap the other, as illustrated in Fig. 2. At the inner end a rivet, a, can seciu'e the jointed sections together if necessary. The object of forming the thimble A in sections is to facilitate the packing, shipping, and transporting of the device, for, as apparent in Fig. 4, a number of said thimbles can be placed in each other within a small compass. The two halves of the thimble A thus united can next be provided with the ordinary flange B- arrcnged between the bead and the outer flange a, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. The flange Bis thus secured to thimble independent of the stove-pipe, and, as willhereinafterappear, the thimble is securely fitted in the flue, and thus a consequent play or loosening of the flange B from wall is obviated. G are springs attached, one to bottom and top, and one each side of thimble, as indicated in Fig. 1, the object of the springs 0 being to secure the thimble firmly in the flue and prevent its play. Therefore, the springs 0, when flat, are bent in the spring shape, (see Fig. 1,) to required tension, to impinge and hold fast in the flue.
As the springs G can be increased or dimin ished, a ready adaptation is obtained to suit the various circumferences of flues. For small flues the springs are bent do-wnfor large, bent up, and in either case the thimble is held secure.
D is the stove-pipe, which fits in the thimble A. The pipe D is prevented from enterin g any deeper in the flue by the inner flange a of thimble, Fig. 1.
The construction of the parts is simple, making a most perfect fit, and avoiding the uncleanliness and inconveniences experienced from imperfect attachments of the stove-pipe to fines.
I claim- 1. A thimble, A, formed in sections, and
united by \l-notches, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. As an improved article of manufacture, a thimble, consisting of the parts A A having outer and inner flanges a a notches a springs 0, applied as and for the purpose set forth.
