STOVEPIPE-JOINT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 26, 1912.
Application filed January 17, 1911. Serial No. 603,158.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, \VAYNE D. FITZPAT" RICK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Glenhayes, in the county of WVayne and State of Test Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stovepipe-Joints; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will onable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in stove pipe joints and my object is to provide means for holding a section of sheet metal in circular form.
A further object is to provide means whereby the edges of the pipe section may be disengaged when desired, and, a further object is to provide means for forming a seal at the meeting edges of the pipe section to prevent smoke, etc., from leaving the pipe at this point.
Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the specification.
In the accompanying drawings, which are made a part of this application, Figure 1 is a perspective View of the pipe section in its assembled position. Fig. 2 is a detail elevation showing the manner of securing the edges of the pipe section together. Fig. 3 is a sectional view thereof as seen on line 3-3, Fig. 2, and, Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional view of one portion of the pipe section showing the retaining stud or button thereon.
Referring to the drawings in which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 indicates the pipe section, which is formed in the usual manner of a single sheet of metal, which when in use is in tubular form, the edges 2 and 3 of the pipe section being overlapped and secured together. The edge 2 is reinforced by doubling the metal upon itself and is secured to the edge 3 by providing said edge 2 with slots 4, one end of which terminates in circular openings 5 to receive the heads 6 of studs 7 carried by the edge section 3. When the pipe section is secured in tubular form the studs 7 are so arranged that they will engage the ends of the slots farthest from the circular opening, in which instance the ends of the two edge sections will register with each other,
but when it is desired to release the studs from the slots, the edges 2 and 3 are moved longitudinally in opposite directions, thereby bringing the heads of the studs in registration with the openings 5 of the slots, through which said heads will pass, thus releasing the edge sections from each other. The heads 6 of the studs are larger than the stems thereof so that when the heads are introduced through the openings and moved to the opposite end of the slot, the heads will overlap the edges of the slot and securely hold the edges ofthe pipe section in assembled position. If it is desired to reduce the diameter of the pipe section, additional slots may be formed in the edge 2 so that the diameter of the pipe can be readily reduced or increased and if it is desired to reduce the size of one end of the pipe, it is only necessary to introduce the stud at that end through the next succeeding slot without disturbing the position of the stud at the opposite end of the pipe.
In order to prevent the smoke or sparks from passing between the edges of the pipe, the edge 3 is provided with folded portions 8 formed by bending said edge back and forth upon itself and the extreme edge is extended outwardly at an angle to form a guard 9, the free edge of which guard presses against the inner face of the pipe section under the spring tension exerted by the folded portion 8. The edge 3 is also extended a distance beyond the edge 2 so as to provide a covering for the slots in the pipe section, thus guarding against any possibility of smoke or the like leaving the pipe section through said slots.
The prime object of my invention is to so arrange the same that the pipe sections can be folded out flat, or substantially so, for shipping purposes and can again be readily assembled into circular form for use.
By this construction it will be readily seen that the pipe section can be quickly assembled together or placed in a flat position for shippingor storage purposes, so that said pipe sections will occupy but a minimum amount of space when not in use. It will further be seen that by providing the guard on the inwardly extending edge of the pipe section, a seal will be formed to prevent the smoke, etc., from leaving the pipe section at this point. It will likewise be seen that by providing two or more of the slots in the outer edge section of the pipe, said pipe section may be reduced in size, if desired.
What I claim is:
1. A pipe section formed from a single sheet of metal, the edges of which overlap each other, the outer of said edges having longitudinal slot-s terminating in enlarged openings, studs carried by the inner edge section adapted to engage the slots and lock the edges of the pipe sections together and the inner edge being extended beyond the slots in the outer edge and redoubled upon itself to form an outwardly extending guard adapted to press against the inner side of the pipe section to form a seal.
2. A pipe section formed from a single sheet of metal, the edges of which overlap outer edge bent inwardly upon itself to reinforce said edge.
