KEY-JOINT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 283,651, dated August 21, 1883.
Application filed June 16, 1883. (No model.)
T all whom tm/ty concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. PALMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rome, in the county of Floyd and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Key-Joints; and I do de-` clare the following to be a full, clear, and eX- aet description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, and to letters or gures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of this invention, and is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a plan ofthe ends of the hoop, showing the slits. Fig. 3 is a cross-section. Fig 4 is a section taken through one set of the slits.
This invention has relation to means for fastening together hoop ends and strips of metal; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the parallel slits, made in the direction of the length of the strips to be connected and through the ends of both of the strips, and abenttransverse key-pin made of hoop-strap inserted through the slits and pressed down to form angular bearings engaging the edges of the slits, whereby it is secured in position and a strong and secure fastening is provided, all as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, the letters Y a and b designate the hoop ends or strip ends which are to be connected. Parallelslits c c, extending in the direction of their length, are
cut through the strips as they are superimposed one upon another.
d represents a transverse bent strip or hoopstrap, the ends of which are passed through the slits and turned outwardly and pressed down in a forcible manner, causing angular bends or bearings e to be formed in the keypin, Which engage intimately the edgesof the slits, so that a strong and secure joint is effected, connecting the strip ends in such a manner that they will remain in their relative position Without becoming torn on turning. l
Having described this invention, What l claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
The key-joint fastening consisting of the superimposed hoop ends, having the parallel slits c, and the bent transverse hey-pin d, extending through said slits and pressed down to form angular bearings e, which engage the edge of the slits, forming a firm and secure joint, substantially as specified.
In testimony Whereofl affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
WM. A. PALMER.
