UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ABBOTT ARNOLD, OF HOUSTON, TEXAS.
BALE-TIE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters IPatent No. 281,821, dated July 24, 1883.
Application filed May 29, 1883. (No model.)
10 and fronting each other, said plate being pivoted at one end to the bale-hoop near one of its ends, so that the other end of the bale-hoop being passed under the tongues and drawn tightly around the bale, the expansion of the I bale on the hoop causes the respective ends to pull on the respective ends of the tie-plate in opposite directions and turn it obliquely to the hoop, so as to grip the edges of the end passed between the tongues and hold it firmly at any point. The tongues may be riveted on the tie-plate instead of being punched up from the plate itself, if preferred; but it will probably be cheapest to punch them, as here shown, all as hereinafter fully described.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of my im- 30 proved tie, and Fig. 2 is a transverse section.
I take a short thin plate, a, a little longer than twice the breadth of the bale-hoop, and
| make or apply tongues b to it in any approved way, said tongues being adapted to allow one of the ends '0 of the bale-hoop to slidebetween 3 5 and under them when the tie-plate ranges at right angles to the bale-hoop, but so that the tongues will grip the edges of the hoop and bind fast on it when turned obliquely to said hoop. At one end of said plate a, which I 0 prefer to extend alittlelonger from the tongues than the other end, I rivet it to end d of the hoop at 6, thus making a very simple tie which only requires the end 0 of the hoop to be eX- tended between the tongues I), as shown in Fig. 1, to make the hoop fast; and it will be seen that said tie can be disconnected without breaking or injuring it, and can be used again. re-
peatedly.
I may make the tongues b separately in the form of cleats or brackets and rivet them on the plate, as before stated, if desired.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The improved bale-tie, consisting of plate a, having tongues b, substantially as herein set forth, and being riveted at one end to the bale hoop near one of the ends of said hoop, sub stantially as described.
ABBOTT ARNOLD.
