To all whom it may concern:

Beit known that I, JOHN W. MEANS, a citizen of the United States of Anierica,residing at T0- wanda, in the county of Bradford and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cotton-Bale Ties and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in bale-ties; and it consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described hereinafter, whereby a cheap, strong, and efficient fastening is produced; and it further consists in the peculiar manner of securing the ends of the band to the fastening device.

The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention.

Figure 1 is a top-plan view of my device as fastened. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional View of the same, showing the manner of attaching the ends of the band thereto. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the parts detached ready to go together.

A represents the buckle or fastener, which consists of the two pieces b 0, both parts bein g provided at their outer ends with the crossbars k k, the slots c e, the intermediate crossbars, Z l, and large openings or slots (1 d, as shown. At one end the part b is provided with the raised stud f, which is preferably made rectangular in shape,but may be of any other form desired. This stud fits in a corresponding opening, g, made in the part c, the said parts,when fastened,being in a line with each other, and presenting a plain unbroken surface at top and bottom, as shown in Fig.2. In order to prevent the parts from becoming detached after the band has been stretched around the bale and fastened, the stud f has pivoted upon it the button h, which is turned at right angles to the part b, so as to extend across the face of the part c, as shown in Fig. 1.

B represents the band,whichis made of the proper length to go around the bale. In socuring the band to the buckle one end is passed through the large slot d, bent over the outer end of the buckle, as at 70, from whence it is carried backward and upward through the slot 0, under the portion of the band previously bent, around thecross-bar Z,andbrought forward between the top of the main portion of the band and the bottom of the buckle, as shownin Fig. 2. By thus securing the ends of the band to the portions of the buckle (the other end of the band being similarly fastened to the other part of the buckle) a fastening is formed which is simple, easily and quickly done, and which will resist any pressure exerted upon the band, as will readily appear from an inspection of the drawings.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patcut isl: The buckle or fastener A, made in two pieces,'both provided with the slots at e and cross-bars k l, the part I) being provided with the stud f, and the button or equivalent device h, which are adapted to be inserted through the opening g made in the part c, the two pieces beingfastened together by turning the button at right angles thereto, substantially as shown and described.

2. The means of fastening the band to the buckle, as described, by" passing the ends through the slots at d, over the cross-bars 70 k, and up through the slots 0 6, around the crossbars I l, the ends being then brought forward, so as to terminate between the under sides of the ends of the buckle and the top surface of the band, substantially as set forth.

3. The buckle or fastener A, made in two pieces, both provided with the slots cl 0 and cross-bars 70 Z, the part I) being provided with the stud f and the button h, which are adapted to be inserted through the opening 9 made in the part c, in combination with the band B, the band being fastened thereto by passing its ends through the slots d d, over and around the cross-bars 70 7c, and up through the slots 6 e, around the cross-bars Z l, the ends being then brought outward, so as to terminate between the under sides of the ends of the buckle and the top surface of the band, substantially as set forth.
