Description

(No Model.)
J. G. BATTELLE.
Bale Tie. 1
No. 233,913. Patented Nov 2, 1880.
ATTORNEY E PnoTo-umosnwum WASHINGTON. D
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN G. BATTELLE, OF MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE.
BALE-TIE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 233,913, dated November 2, 1880.
Application filed September 24, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN G. BATTELLE, of
Memphis, in the county of Shelby and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bale-Ties and 1 do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification. My invention relates to an improvement in bale-ties, the object being to provide a cheap and durable method of securing the button or stud fastening to the band and with this end in view my invention consists, essentially, in a band having an elongated slotformed in one end thereof, the shank of a button or stud located in said slot, and the end of the band turned back to partially cover the slot and prevent the heads of the button or stud from becoming detached from the band.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a view, in perspective, of a portion of a band provided with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same.
A represents the band, and B an elongated slot punched therein.
0 is a button 01 stud, consisting of the elon; gated heads a a, connected by ashan k, 1). One of the heads, a or a, is inserted in the slot B, and the end D of the band turnedback against or in close proximity to the shank I) of the stud or fastening, thereby covering a portion of the elongated slot or opening and preventing the displacement of the stud or fastening.
This method of construction is very simple and comparatively inexpensive. But little extra length of band is required to form the folded end D, and as the folded end is an integral part of the band the latter is not weakened, as is the case when separate plates are riveted thereto. Again, by folding the end of the band backward partially over the elongated slot the band is re-enforced at its end, and thereby adapted to withstand greater strain than it'ot' only a single thickness.
The stud or fastening may be made of cast or wrought metal, and may be made of any shape or size.
It is evident that I may deviate slightly from the particular form and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit of my invention, and hence I would have it understood that I do not restrict myself to the exact construction and arrangement of parts shown and described; but,
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A band having a stud or fastening secured thereto by a folded portion of the band, substantially as set forth.
2. A band having an elongated slotformed in one end thereof, and a button or stud inserted in said opening and retained against displacement by the end of the band folded over a portion of said elongated slot, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 18th day of September, 1880.
JOHN G. BATTELLE.
