UNITED STATES PATENT- OFFICE.
JAMEs WARDLE, OF'HOPE, BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA.
CAR-H EATER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO, 380,066, dated March 27, 1888.
' Application filed June 13, mm. Serial N6. 241,210. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AMEs WARDLE, of Hope, in the Province of British Columbia and Dominion of i Canada, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Car-Heaters, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
. My invention relates to an improvement in car-heaters, and has for its object to provide a IO heater which, should the car meet with an accident and the heater be overturned, will not allow the escape of fuel, and wherein the said heater willbe capable of sustaining great weight and abuse without injury thereto.
1 The invention consists in the construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures. v
Figure lis a central vertical section through the heater, and Fig. 2 is a front elevation 2 thereof.
In carrying out the invention the stove is constructed of two concentric cylindrical casings of malleable steel or iron, an inner cylinder, A, and an outer cylinder, A, both cylinders being strengthened by outer attached metal hoops or hands, a. Between the said outer and inner cylinder a space, B, is made to intervene for the circulation of air, as shown in Fig. 1.
5 Both cylinders are mounted upon and attached to a centrally-apertured base, B, secured to the car-floor, and the inner cylinder, A, is provided with a conical bottom, 0, adapted to project downward through the floor flush, or nearly so, with the under side,
above which conical bottom a grate, C, is secured, through which small coal and 'cinders may only pass. The outer cylinder, A, is provided with a series of apertures, d, between 5 the encircling hands a, and the inner cylinder, A, is capped by an apertured plate, d, whereby drawings, forming a part of this specification,.
the fuel is not permitted to enter the smokepipe in the event the stove should overturn. The top D of the stove is dome-shaped, the flanged'portion thereof being adapted to cover the air-space B. Centrally the dome an aperture is made for the smoke-pipe d A latched fuel-door, E, is provided in the inner cylinder, and a registering opening is made in the outer casing, covered by an apertured door, E, adapted to slide upward in ways 6 and operated by a screw-rod, e, attached to the top, which rod travels in a threaded aperture in the flange of the top D by a suitable crank, 6
A crank-rod, F, is projected through the base B and also through the floor of the car,
having attached to the lower end thereof a horizontal plate, F, which acts as a damper to control the supply of air to the fire, and also as 'a means whereby the ashes may be dumped through the conical bottom 0, the lower aperture of which bottom is normally covered or partially covered by the said damper.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, the operation will be readily understood.
Having thusdescribed my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 1 I An improved stove consisting of the apertured base B, the outer perforated cylinder, A, secured to the base, the inner cylinder, A, provided with a conical bottom projecting through the aperture of the base, the valve F for closing the conical bottom of the inner cylinder, the flanged dome D, covering the up- A per ends of the said cylinders, and the apertured cap d over the upper end of the inner cylinderand secured between the flange of the dome and the upper end of the inner cylinder, substantially as herein shown and described.
JAMES WARDLE.
