N. PETERS. FHQTOMTHDGRAPHER UNIrEnS'rA'rEs PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE onAsE, OF BUFFALO, NEw YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHlMNEY-CAPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 198,350, dated December 18, 1877; application filed February 19, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE CHASE, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, and a resident of the city of Buii'alo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Chimney-Caps, which improvements are fully set forth in the following specification and ac companying drawing, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 represents a side elevation of the same without the outside rim, and Fig. 3 a top view of the chimney-cap complete.
The object of my invention is to assist in producing a draft up the chimney, and consequently prevent it from smoking, whether the wind blows up, down, or against it from any direction and it consists of a lower tube to lit the pipe or chimney, having a short rim of smaller diameter at the top, and a cylinder of suitable length, closed at each end, and supported a short distance above the top of said tube or pipe by two or more arms or braces, in combination with an outer rim or shorter pipe, as will be more clearly understood by reference to the drawing, in which- A represents the outer rim; B, the lower pipe or tube, to be attached to the chimney or other pipe. C is the cylindrical top piece, having both ends closed at D E, so asto make it equivalent to a solid cylinder. Itis heldin position, as shown in Fig. 2, by two or more braces, F. G represents the rim, of smaller diameter, at the top of pipe B. The braces F support both the outer rim A and top piece C, and are riveted to the parts in the ordinary manner, so as to leave the space H between the lower part of C and upper part of G as a passage for the smoke and gases.
The object of the cylinder C and rim A, arranged as shown, is to provide a passage of sufficient length to cause the air to pass by the opening H, so as to cause a partial vacuum in the pipe B, and thereby produce a draft up the chimney. The opening or space H is arranged about midway between the top and bottom of the rim A, so that the same result follows whatever may be the direction of the wind. The rim G, by contracting the diameter of the opening in the top of B, affords a protection against air entering pipe B when blowing down on top of the chimney-cap.
I claim as my invention- The pipe B, provided with the rim G, of smaller diameter, cylinder C, closed at both ends, D E, and supported with braces F, so as to leave the space H, in combination with the outside rim A, substantially as and for the purposes speciiied.
GEORGE CHASE.
