PETER MACK woon, or IVY LEA, CANADA.
SAFETY ATTACHMENT FOR GUN-=LOCKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters latent N 0. 608,742, dated August 9, 1898.
Application filed April 15, 1897.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, PETER MACK \VOOD, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Ivy Lea, in the Province of Ontario, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Attachments for Gun-Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to safety attachments for gun-locks; and it consists, essentially,of an arm attached to the hammer of a gun in either right or left position.
The object of the invention is to insure safety in the transportation of fowling or other firearms and to provide a hammerlock that will prevent the accidental movement of the hammer, but which can be readily released to permit the hammer to perform its function when desired.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a portion of a gun stock, barrel, and hammer and other relative appurtenances, showing the improved device applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of a hammer, showing the safety attachment thereon and in open position. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the portions of the safety attachment and hammer disconnected.
Referring to the drawings, wherein like numerals of reference are employed to designate corresponding parts in the several views, the numeral 1 represents the hammer of a gun, which may be of any preferred form of con-. struction and either right or left. On the side of said hammer is secured a hinge-plate 2, having a concaved bend 3 at one end thereof, located over a depression 4 in the hammer, and within the said depression and concaved bend is mounted the axle or turn-pin 5 of a safety-arm 6. On the opposite end of the axle or turn-rod of the safety-arm 6 is secured another arm 7, which adapts the device to be used with either a right or left hand hammer, as will be readily understood. When the safety-arm 6 is in position to prevent the hammer from accidentally striking a firing- Serial No. 632,314. (No model.)
pin or a nipple, it is pressed inwardly in front of the hammer, and movement of the latter is thereby prevented; but when it is desired to permit the hammer to perform its proper function the said safety-arm 6 is thrown outwardly by means of the arm 7 being engaged by the thumb of the hand used in operating the trigger, which operation can be quickly performed Without delay in firing the gun. The hinge-plate has one flattened inner surface engaging the pin 5, which keeps the safety attachment from having unnece sary movement or producing a rattling sound. It will be readily understood that the device can be readily detached in the case of a single-barrel gun and changed from a right hand to a left hand barrel without in the least changing the construction and arrangement of the several parts or departing from the nature or spirit of the invention, and also in a reverse application of the attachment the arm 7 takes the place of arm 6.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is 1. Asafety attachment for guns, consisting of an arm movably attached to the side of a hammer, and adapted to be turned inwardly in front of the latter, to limit its movement, substantially as and forthe purpose described.
2. The combination with the hammer of a gun, of a safety attachment consisting of a hinge-plate with a loop at one end thereof, an axle or turn-rod having arms on opposite ends thereof, adapted to be reversed and to be turned in front of the said hammer, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. The combination with a gun-hammer, of an aXle removably attached thereto and having arms on opposite sides thereof whereby said arms may be reversed and used in either a right or left position to intercept the fall of the hammer, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
