Means of Attaching the Fore-End to Gun Barrels...
N0,I57,699, Patented Dec.15,1874.
k #0, I a 7 Try 4 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM M. SCOTT, OF BIRMINGHAM, GREAT BRITAIN.
IMPROVEMENT lN MEANS OF ATTACHING THE FORE END T0 GUN-BARRELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 157,699, dated December 15, 1874; application filed July 19, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. Scorrr, of the city of Birmingham, Kingdom of Great Britain, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Attaching the Fore End of a Gun-Stock to the Barrels; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which Figure 1 represents a central longitudinal section of a portion of a double-barrel gun through the ribs, to which. the barrels are secured, having my improved spring-catch applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a similar section to Fig. 1, representing a modification of the spring-fastening. Fig. 3 represents a plan of the inner face of the fore end of a gunstock prepared to receive my improved fastening.
Like letters indicate corresponding parts in all of the figures.
My invention relates to securing the fore end of a gun-stock to the barrels, and releasing the same therefrom, by means of a selfacting spring-catch and sliding thumb-bolt, constructed and arranged substantially as herein described.
To the inner surface D of the fore end of a gun-stock, B, is fitted a metal strap, E, and secured thereto by means of screws 00. Upon this strap E are mounted the several parts constituting the spring-catch proper, and by which the fore end of the stock is held firmly in place against the lower surface of the gunbarrels. Projecting from the lower side of the lower rib O is the usual lug F, in the edge of which a notch, c, is formed to receive the corresponding-shaped face of the catch 0. This catch 0 is pivoted at r to the metal strap E, and is forced into the notch c by a spring, s, which is also secured to the strap E.
By this arrangement of spring-catch 0 and notched lug F, it will readily be seen that the fore end of the gun-stock is forced against the lower sides of the barrels, and retained there in consequence of the spring-catch 0 operating in the arc of a circle, the spring 8 forcing the face of the catch 0 eccentrically or downward against the notch c, as represented.
To relieve the face of the catch 0 from the notch c in the edge of the lug F, so as to remove the fore end of the stock from the barrels, a sliding spring thumb-bolt, G, is arranged and secured to the fore end of the stock B, the end 1' of the bolt bearing against the lower side of the stem a of the catch. This spring thumb-bolt is mounted in a guide, to, which guide is secured to the fore end of the stock by a screw, 0.
Thus by simply placing the fore end of the stock B in position, and slightly pressing it toward the barrels, the spring-catch will take into the notched lug, and firmly retain the fore end of the stock against the lower surfaces of the barrels, because of the spring-catch bearing constantly against the lower side of the notch in the lug F.
In Fig. 2 the spring 8 forms the catch, and takes directly into the notch in the edge of the lug F, the end n of the sliding spring thumbbolt acting as a wedge to release the spring in removing the gun'stock.
It is evident to those skilled inthe art that many modifications of my invention may be produced, diifering only in form, and without departing from what is here claimed; and I desire to be understood as not confining myself to the precise arrangement herein shown and described, but to embrace its mechanical equivalent.
Having thus fully described my improvement in a self-acting spring-catch for securing the fore end of a gun-stock to the barrels, what I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with the fore end of a gunstock, of a spring-catch and sliding thumbbolt, for connecting the fore end with the barrel, the combination being and operating sub stantially as described.
WILLIAM M- SCOTT.
