Be it known that 1, AUGUST Hanson, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Sectional Stocks for Firearms; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-

My invention relates to an improvement in firearm-stocks of the class in which the fore stock is made as an integral extension of the butt-stock, the object being to effect an economy of material and also avoid the possible twisting of the gun-barrels by the warping of the stocks.

Vith these ends in view my invention consists in a gun having a sectional stock comprising a butt-stock and a fore-stock having certain details of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.

In carrying out my invention, as shown in Figs.1 to 5, inclusive,the stock A terminates at its forward end in a U-shaped tenon A, forming a shoulder A of corresponding U shape. The said tenon A is adapted to enter the rear end of the oval rear band B, against the rear edge of which the said shoulder A impinges, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The said band B passes over the butt-end of the gun-barrel C by which it is supported and to which it is secured by means of a transversely-arranged screw D passing through the band at opposite points therein, through an opening A formed on the tenon, and through a transverse slot 0 formed in the lower face of the barrel, whereby the band is prevented from LIV I I l lower face of the gun-barrel.

The fore-stock E of the gun is formed entirely independent of the butt-stock A and provided at its rear end with a U-shaped tenon E, forming a shoulder E of corresponding U shape. The said tenon is adapted to enter the forward end of the hand, against the forward edge of which its shoulder E abuts. For preventing the fore-stock from longitudinal movement with respect to the gun-barrel, as well as for assisting in crowding its tenon E within the forward end of the band B, I form in it, about midway of its length, a recess F, the rear wall F of which is inclined. As it is lifted in the manner described, the inclined rear face G of the stud G strikes the inclined rear wall F of the recess F formed in the forestock, and the two inclined faces coact with each other to'crowd the fore-stock positively rearward, whereby its tenon E is crowded into the forward end of the band.

The forward portion of the fore-stock is held in place by means of an intermediate band H and a front band I, both of which may be of any ordinary construction and held in place in any desired way.

The cover J may be of any approved construction and held in place in any approved manner. As herein shown,itis held in place by means of the sight K and by the insertion of its forward end under the intermediate band H. I am aware, however, that sectional stocks for firearms are not broadly new, and that it is old to form a transverse joint between the forward end of the butt-stock and the rear end of the fore-stock. I am also aware that it is old to secure a stock-band to a gun-barrel by means of a transversely-arranged screw passing through the band and through a notch in the lower face of the barrel, and do not broadly claim that construction.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In a gun, the combination with the barrel thereof, of a band applied to the butt-end of the said ,barrel, means for securing the hand against rotation with respect to the barrel, a butt-stock formed at its forward end with a tenon adapted to enter the rear end of the said band, and with a shoulder adapted to engage with the rear end of the said band, an independently-formed fore-stock the rear end of which is furnished with a tenon adapted to enter the forward end of the said band, and with a shoulder adapted to engage with the forward edge of the said band which conceals ing witnesses.
