This invention relates to an improvement in firearms, and has for its object a convenient construction whereby the barrel may be readily detached from the stock for convenience of packing or transportation.

- The invention is applicable alike to breechloading and magazine firearms; and'it consists in making the portion of the receiver which carries'the barrel detachable from the remainder of the receiver, which is attached to the stock, combined'with mechanism for securely locking-the partsjtogether, yet so as to permit their ready separation, as hereinaf-- ter described, and

particularly recited in the claims.

In illustrating theinventionIshowtheparts of the arm such as contained inthe arm known as the XVinchester repeating-firearm. The receiver at its forward end A carries the barrel B and magazine 0 in the usual manner; but this forward part A','together with the cheeks D D, is made separable from the bottom portion E ofthe receiver, and this bottom portion E carries at its rear end the tangs F F, by which the stock is attached. The bottom or tang portion E is of width corresponding to the width between the cheeks and so that the two parts may be readily set together, the rear ends of the cheeks abutting against a corresponding shoulder G on the tang portion of the receiver. The forward endof this tang portion or bottom of the receiver terminates in a tenon or projection H, and the fornear the shoulder, and the cheeks are constructed with corresponding holes K" L.

Through these holes the screw M is introduced, .this screw serving to form the pivot on which 76 the hammer may swing. The hole K in the one cheek is countersunk upon its outside, (see'Figs. 2 and 3,) and the screw 1s constructed I with a corresponding conical neck- N, and the screw is also provided with a convenienthead 7 5 O, by whichitmaybeturned. Preferably the v hole L is threaded to receive the end of the,

QThe slotP is pro- 80 vided in order'that the two parts may be'sepe arated without-the entire withdrawal of the screw, which-would be inconvenient in case the connecting-screw is employed as the hammer-pivot. ,As thus constructed when it is desired to separate the two parts the screw is" withdrawn so far as to take its tip out of con- .nection with the cheek onthat side and to withdraw the conical'neck from the countersink of the hole K, and, as seen in brokeng'o 'lines,Fig. 2, the parts may then be withdrawn, the slot P permitting that part to pass freely from the-body of the screw, and when the parts are again set together the screw is re- 1 turned to interlock the two parts at the rear and the conical neck acts, in connection with the countersink, as a cam tending to draw the I two parts together. Thus a firm connection is made between the twoparts, but leaving them always in a. condition for convenient rec and easy separation. While preferring to construct the one check with a slot- 1, so as to permit the separation without the entire removal of the screw, the

slot and the countersink may both be omitted, as seen in Fig. 5, in which case it would require substantially the entire removal of the screw before the parts could be separated.

I claim 1. The herein -deseribcd improvement in firearms, Consisting in a receiver carrying the barrel at its forward end, the sides or cheeks of the receiver made apart of such forward end, the rear and bottom portion' of the receiver adapted for attachment to the stock and separable from the said forward part and checks and so as to set between the cheeks,

the forward end of the said bottom portion of the receiver constructed with a tenon and the forward part of the receiver constructed with a corresponding mortise to interlock with said tenon when the parts are set together, combined with a screw'or pin through the said cheeks and rear part of the receiver, substaning witnesses.
