LEWIS MERTZ, OF GENESEO, ILLINOIS.
LAMP-CHIMNEY HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 608,615, dated August 9, 1898. Application filed April 20, 1898- Serial No. 678,272. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LEWIS MERTZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Geneseo, in the county of Henry and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Lamp-Chimney Holder, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in lamp-chimney holders.
The object of the present-invention is to improve the construction of lamp-chimney holders and to provide a simple, inexpensive, and efficient device, adapted to be readily applied to a lamp-chimney and capable of clamping the same firmly on a lamp-burner and of absolutely preventing a chimney from being accidentally shaken from a lamp while the latter is carried in the hand.
A further object of the invention is to provide a lamp-chimney holder which will yieldingly engage a chimney to prevent it from fallin g off a lamp and which cannot become accidentally disengaged from a burner.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a lamp-chimney holder constructed in accordance with this invention and shown applied to a lamp. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the device detached.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in both figures of the drawings.
1 designates a substantially elliptical loop constructed of resilient material, such as spring-wire, and adapted to fit on a lampchimney and be supported by the bulged portion thereof, whereby it is adapted to engage the chimney 2, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawings. The ends of the elliptical loop are connected to the upper terminals of wires or rods 3 and 4, which are provided at their lower ends with integral hooks 5 for engaging under a lamp-burner 6 at opposite sides thereof, whereby the chimney is firmlyheld on the burner and is prevented from accidentally falling oif the lamp while the latter is being carried. The terminals of the wire or other material of which the resilient elliptical loop is constructed are provided with eyes 7, into which is linked an eye 8 of the upper end of the rod or wire l, whereby the rod or wire 4: is hingedly connected with the resilient loop, and the sides of the latter are connected together. The other wire or rod 3 is provided at its upper end with an eye 9, which is connected to the other end of the elliptical loop and preferably engages an eye 10, formed in the loop, to prevent the eye 9 from moving longitudinally of the same on the sides thereof; but this eye 10, which is formed by coiling the wire of the loop, may be omitted, if desired.
The wires or rods 3 and 4, which are hinged to the ends of the loop, are adapted to swing inward and outward to engage the lamp burner and also to disconnect the device therefrom. In applying the device to a lamp the loop is placed over the upper portion of the chimney and one of the hooks is interlocked with one side of the burner. The other wire or rod is drawn downward sufficiently to engage its hook with the burner. By this operation the end portions of the elliptical loop are drawn downward to bow the sides slightly and to produce a spring clamping action, whereby the device is firmly held in engagement with the burner and is capable of securely clamping the lamp-chimney thereon.
The invention has the following advantages: The device, which is exceedingly simple and inexpensive in construction, exerts a spring clamping action on a chimney and is capable of firmly holding the same on a burner, so that the said chimney can not accidentally fall off a lamp and break while the lamp is being carried. The eye at the upper end of the rod or wire 4 is linked into the eyes at the terminals of the material of which the resilient loop is constructed, and by this construction the sides of the loop are connected and the wire or rod 4 is hinged to them.
Changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is- A lamp-chimney holder comprising a resilient elliptical loop constructed of resilient loo material provided at its terminals with eyes eye of the rod 4 being linked into theeyes of 10 located at one end of the loop the latter the loop, substantially as described. being arranged to engage a lamp-chimney at In testimony that I claim the foregoing as the center of its sides and adapted to project my own I have hereto aflixed my signature in 5 outward beyond the lamp-chimney, and the the presence of two witnesses.
rods 3 and 4 provided at their lower ends with LEWIS MERTZ. means for engaging a burner and having eyes WVitnesse's: at their upper ends engaging the ends of the A. XV. VAN HOUSEN,
loop at points beyond the lamp-chimney, the JOHN C. FISCHER.
