CHIMNEY-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 11, 1910.
Application filed March 23, 1910. Serial No. 551,053.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Lrron SPARKS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Blue Ridge, in the county of Collin and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chinmey-Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in lamp chimney holders and has for its object to provide a very simple'and convenient device of this character which will securely lock the lamp upon the burner and also permit of its easy removal therefrom.
Another object is to provide a lamp chimney holder which is capable of attachment to lamp chimneys of various sizes and may be easily and quickly arranged thereon or removed.
A further object resides in the provision of a lamp chimney holder of great efficiency and durability and one which may be manufactured at a low cost.
\Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, here inafter fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which r- Figure 1 is a side elevation illustrating the application of my improved lamp chimney holder; Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an enlarged side elevation of the holder removed; Fig. 4 is a detail Tagmentary perspective view illustrating the means for adjusting the clamping band; and Fig. 5 is a detail perspect1ve view of one of the holding levers.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 5 indicates the burner of a lamp which may be of any ordinary or approved construction, said burner being usually provided with a bead or angular rim 5 which supports the lamp chimney 6. The lower neck portion of the lamp chimney 6 which 1s disposed over the burner is provided with the spaced annular beads 6 molded thereon.
Upon the neck of the chimney and between the annular beads 6, a metallic band 7 is adapted to be clamped. This band is formed of resilient sheet metal and one of its ends is provided with a longitudinal slot 8 through which a threaded stud 9, carried on the other end of the band is adapted to extend. Upon this stud 9, a wing nut 10 is threaded and is adapted to be adjusted into binding engagement upon the band to secure the ends together against relative movement.
The metal band 7 is formed at diametrically opposite points with the ears 11. A rod or pintle 12 has its ends rigidly secured inthese ears. Upon this rod a holding lever 13 is loosely mounted. The lever 13 is bent upon itself between its ends to form the bearing portion 13 through which the pintle 12 extends. One of the end portions of the lever extends upwardly and outwardly between the ears 11 and is adapted to provide a finger engaging portion 1 1. The lower end of the lever also extends outwardly from between the ears and has its extremity bent inwardly at a right angle for engagement under the annular rim 5 of the burner as clearly shown at 15 in Fig. 1. This angular end of the locking lever is held in engagement with the burner against accidental outward movement by means of a spring member 16. This spring member is formed from a single length of resilient wire and has its end portions 16 coiled around the rod 12, the extremities of said wire being secured to the ears 11. The in termediate portion of this wire spring bears against the inner face of the upper end of the locking lever as shown at 17 and normally tends to force the same outwardly and the lower end of said lever inwardly whereby the angular extremity 15 of the lever is yieldingly held in locking engagement with the burner. When it is desired to remove the lamp chimney from the burner, the operator engages the outwardly extending finger portions of the holding levers 13 with his thumb and forefinger and presses inwardly upon the same whereby the tension of the spring members 16 is overcome and the inwardly disposed extremities 15 of the lever moved outwardly to disengage the same from the annular rim 5 of the burner. The lamp chimney together with the attachment is then lifted vertically from the burner and thus removed so that the wick may be trimmed or for other purposes. When it is desired to clean the chimney, the wing nut 10 is loosened so as to allow the metallic band 7 to expand beyond the annular heads 6 formed on the neck of the chimney. The holding attachment may thus be easily and quickly removed and as locking levers 13 holding the same upon the burner against any possibility of sidewise or lateral movement.
Vhile I have shown and described the preferable embodiment of my invention, it
will be understood that the same is susceptible of many minor modifications without departing from the essential features or- -sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is l. A device of the character described comprising an annular metallic band adapted to be secured upon the neck of a lamp chimney, and pivotally mounted yieldingly held locking levers carried by said band for independent movement adapted for engagement with the burner of the lamp to hold the chimney thereon.
2. A device of the character described comprising an annular resilient band, means for adjustably connecting the ends of said band and adapted to clamp the same upon the neck of a lamp chimney and a plurality of locking levers pivotally mounted upon the band and yieldingly held against lateral and transverse movement said levers being movable independently of the band and adapted for engagement with the burner of the lamp to hold the chimney thereon.
3. A device of the character described comprising a resilient sheet metal band adapted for clamping engagement upon the neck of a lamp chimney, locking levers pivotally mounted upon the band normally engaging with the burner of the lamp to hold the chimney thereon, and springs yieldingly holding said levers against lateral or transverse movement to engage the same with the burner.
4. A device of the character described comprising a metallic band adapted to be engaged upon the neck of a lamp chimney, means adjustably securing the ends of said band together, spaced ears formed on said band, a locking lever pivotally mounted between said ears and extending above and below the same, and a spring element engaging with said lever to normally hold the lower end thereof in locking engagement with the burner.
5. A device of the character described comprising a resilient metallic band adapted to be secured upon the neck of a lamp chimney, means for adjustably connecting the ends of said band, spaced ears formed upon said band at diametrically opposite points, a locking lever pivotally mounted between each pair of cars and extending above the same to form a finger engaging portion, and a spring element engaging with said portion and normally holding the lower end of said lever in locking engagement with the lamp burner.
6. A device of the character described comprising a resilient adjustable band adapted to be secured upon the neck of a lamp chimney, spaced ears formed upon said band at diametrically opposite points, a pintle connecting said cars, a locking lever formed with an intermediate bearing portion engaged upon said pintle, said lever extending above and below the same, and a spring coiled upon said pintle and having its intermediate portion engaged with the upper end of the lever, said lever having its lower end inwardly extended and normally held by said spring in locking engagement with the burner.
7. In a device of the character described, the combination with a lamp chimney having spaced annular beads formed upon its neck, of a resilient adjustable band adapted to be secured on the neck between said beads, spaced ears formed upon said band at diametrically opposite points, a lever pivotally mounted between each pair of ears, ,one end. of said lever being bent at right angles for engagement with the lamp burner, and a spring element engaging with the other end of said lever to normally hold the same in locking engagement with the burner.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
