PENHOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 607,213, dated July 12, 1898.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES HENRY CAMP- BELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Jose, in the county of Santa Clara and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Penholders, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to penholders; and the objects thereof are to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction and operation and which is provided wit-l1 improved means for ejecting the pen or removing the same from the holder; and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a plan View of my improved penholder, showing the pen in position; Fig. 2, a central longitudinal section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4: a plan view of a spring-ring which forms a part of the holder.
In the drawings forming part of this speci- 'iication the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same numerals of reference in each of the views, and in said drawings I have shown at 5 an ordinary penstock, and mounted on the end thereof is a tube 6, which is provided at its outer end with a baclnvardly-curved flange or rim 7, and formed in the outer end of the tube 6 and extending through the flange or rim 7 is a lou gitudinal slot 8.
The tube 6 projects to a predetermined distance beyond the end of the pen-stock, and mounted therein beneath the slot 8 is a circular plate 9, said plate being semicircular in cross-section and provided at its sides or edges with outwardly-directed longitudinal flanges 10, and said plate is also provided With'a longitudinal slot 11, which corresponds with the slot 8 in the tube 6 and opens outwardly, and the tube 6 and plate 9 are made of thin spring metal. The tube 6 and plate 9 are united at their inner ends by means of a rivet 12, and pass ing through the slots 8 and 11 in the tube 6 and plate 9 is a sliding pin 13, which is provided at its inner end with a head 14: and at its outer end with an enlarged knob or head 15, and said pin is adapted to be moved longitudinally along said slots by means of the knob or head 15. r
I also employ a spring-ring 16, which is shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4, and said ring is an open ring, and the ends thereof overlap and are preferably provided with outwardlydirected lugs or projections 17, and in practice this ring is secured in the bottom of the tube 6, near the outer .end thereof, by a rivet or otherwise, as shown at 18, and the overlapping end of said sprin g-rin g supports the outer end of the plate 9, and the outwardly-directed lugs or projections 17 project beneath the sides of the edges of .said plate, as clearly shown in Fig. 3, and this affords a yielding support for the outer end of the plate 9.
I have also shown at 19 a pen, and in practice the pen is connected with my improved holder by forcing the butt-end thereof. between the outer ends of the tube 6 and plate 9, and this operation is facilitated by means of the flanges 11 on the plate 9, the slots 8 and 11, formed in said tube and said plate, and also by the outwardly-curved flange or rim 7 on the end of the tube 6, and said pen may be ejected from the holder Whenever desired by simply forcing the pin 13 outwardly, as will be readily understood.
The object of forming the outwardly and backwardly curved flange or rim 7 on the end of the tube 6 is to provide a guard to prevent the pen from being inserted too farinto the ink, and also to prevent ink from reach-= ing the fingers, and my improved penholder is simple in construction and operation and is also comparatively inexpensive, while being well adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended.

claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A penholder consisting of a tube which is provided with a longitudinal slot which opens at the outer end thereof, a curved or segmental plate mounted in said tube beneath said slot and provided with a similar slot, a pin mounted to slide in said slots, said tube and said plate being connected at the inner end of said plate, and an open springring mounted in said tube near the outer end thereof, and serving to support the outer end of said plate, substantially as shown and described.
53. A penholder consisting of a tube which is provided with a longitudinal slot which opens at the outer end thereof, a curved or segmental plate mounted in said tube beneath said slot and provided with a similar slot, said tube and said plate being connected at the inner end of said plate, and an open spring-ring mounted in said tube near the outer end thereof, and serving to support the outer end of said plate, said spring-ring having overlapping ends and terminal flanges, and a longitudinally movable pin which passes through the slots in said tube and said plate, substantially as shown and described.
A penholder consisting of a tube which is provided with a longitudinal slot which opens at the outer end thereof, a curved or segmental plate mounted in said tube beneath said slot and provided with a similar slot, said tube and said plate being connected at the inner end of said plate, and an open spring-ring mounted in said tube near the outer end thereof, and serving to support the outer end of said plate, and a longitudinallymovable Pin which passes through the slots in said tube and said plate, the outer end of said tube being also provided with a backwardly-curved annular flange or rim, substantially as shown and described.
4. A penholder consisting of a tube which is provided with a longitudinal slot which opens at the outer end thereof, and a backwardly-curved flange or rim, a curved or segmental plate mounted in said tube beneath said slot and provided with a similar slot, said tube and said plate being connected at the inner end of said plate, and an open springring mounted in said tube near the outer end thereof, said ring having overlapping and flanged ends and serving to support the outer end of said plate, and a longitudinally-movable pin which passes through the slots in said tube and said plate, and said plate being provided at the edges or sides thereof with outwardly-directed longitudinal flanges, substantially as shown and described.
