IMPROVEMENT IN ENCIL-SHARPBNERS.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

Be it known that we, J. L. GOLES and D. H. GOLES, both' of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Pencil-Sharpener, Holder, and Eraser, combined; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which drawing- Figure 1 represents a side view of this invention, showing its application to a pencil.

This invention relates to a pencil-Sharpener, to the tip of which is secured a piece of India rubber, in such a manner that the Sharpener and rubber are firmly united, and that said Sharpener forms a handle which facilitates the operation of using the rubber, while the rubber forms an elastic button, whereby the Sharpener is prevented from dropping accidentally out of the pocket of the person carrying the saine. From the receivingend of the Sharpener project two spring-jaws, 'which form a guide for the pencil while the same is being sharpencd, and also a holder for the pencil, when the same is inserted into the Sharpener, for the protection of its point while being carried in the pocket. That side of the Sharpener opposite to the cutter is rendered yielding,

and connected to a button in such a manner that,` by pressing t-he'button, the point of the pencil can be gradnelly worked down to the required sharpness.

A represents our Sharpener, the body of which is formed of a conical tube, one side of whiehis perforated with a slot extending nearly throughout the entire length of the tube. 0n the edge of this slot is secured the cutter a, so that its cutting-edgeprojects into the interior of the tube far enough to produce the desired eiiect on the pencil to be sharpened.` That side of the tube A which is opposite to the cutter is movable, and it is connected to a button, I, so that by pressing on said button, the bottom end of the movable side is forced in towards the cutter.

It' the button is not pressed in, and a pencil is inserted, the cutter-takes oil` a shaving, and the point of the pencil is worked down to the shape shown in tig. 4, but pressing gently on the button while the pencil is continually turned in the Sharpener, the point of the pencilcan` be brought down to the shape shown in tig. 5, leaving the same perfectly sharp, and in the best possible shape for draughtipg or writing.

From the large or receiving-end of the conical tube A project two jaws, d, which embrace the body of the pencil, and form a guide for the same while it is being sharpened, so that said pencil, on being inserted into the Sharpener, is held parallel with the axis-of the tubo A, and the operation of sharpening is materially facilitated.`

Said jaws also form a holder for the pencil, retaining the same in the Sharpener when inserted therein, for the protection of its point while being carried in the pocket. A

To the tip of the tube A we have secured a piece oi'4 India rubber, c, which serves usan eraser, so that the Sharpener forms a convenient handle for the rubber while the same is-being used for erasing, and at the same time the rubber forms a button, whereby the sharpener is, to some extent, retained in the pocket of the person carrying thc same. Y

Bythese means we have produced a sharpener capable of giving to Vthe point of the pencil the proper shape and sharpness, and a holder capable of protecting the point, and also a very convenient eraser.

We are aware that itis not new to apply jaws to a pencil-Sharpener in order to protect the points of pencils while being carried in the pocket; such devices we do not therefore claim in themselves.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 1. The arrangement, with the sharpening-tube A, of the jaws d, at the receiving-end thereof, and commu` nicating with each other so as to act as aiy support and guide for the pencil While it is being shaa'pened, and also form a holrlex` to protect its point Whilev being carried, as set forth.

2. The button b, in combination with the movable side of lthe tube A, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. n 4
