BOX-FASTENER.
PEGIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent NO. 606,918, dated July 5, 1898.
Application filed May '7, 1897. Serial No. 635,468. (No model.)
T0 [LZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN 1V. EVANS, of Greenville, in the county of \Vayne and State of Missouri, have invented" a new and Improved Box-Fastener, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention is a cover-fastener for boxes used for shipping goods, and it relates to a device serving both to fasten and to hinge the cover and at the same time permitting the cover to be readily disconnected from the box.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts, and which is a vertical section through the central portion of the case, illustrating the application of the improvement thereto.
In the construction of the body of the case the sides are of equal length and longer than the ends 11, so that the bottom 12 when placed in position in the body will bear against the inner faces of the sides and the under edges of the end pieces thereof, enabling the bottom to have a much firmer hold than when placed in position in the ordinary way.
In the construction of the box throughout barbed staples 10 are preferably used, and upon the outer face of each end 11 of the body a transverse bar 13 is firmly secured, said bars serving as handles, and they will hereinafter be referred to as handle-bars.
The case is shown as provided with a central partition 12; but such partition may be omitted, if desired. 7
One of the handlebars 13 is provided with a suitable fastening device by which it may be attached to the cover 20.
In the handle-bar, at the opposite end of the body, a central-cavity 22 is made in its upper surface, in which a staple 23 is placed, also serving as a keeper, adapted to receive a hook or the curved lower end of a pin 24, which is secured in a flange 21, attached to the cover of the box. The lower outer edge of the top flange covering the hook 24 is rounded off to a greater or less extent, as shown at 25.
When the top is locked on the body,'to remove the top it is simply necessary to release the fastening at the right-hand end of the cover, whereupon that end of the cover may be raised and rocked upon the handle-bar 13 at the opposite end of the body, the rocking movement of the top as the cover is raised serving to cause a disengagement of the hook 524 from the keeper 23.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of body portion, a cover for the body portion, a transverse bar secured to one end of the body portion and extending horizontally along the same and forming a handle, the bar having a recess produced in the upper surface thereof, a staple driven vertically into the bar and located in the recess thereof, and below the upper surface of the bar, and a rigid pin carried by the cover and projecting downward therefrom, the pin being bent downwardly and upwardly to form a hook, the hook being rigid and capable of I fitting snugly within the recess and of looking with the staple.
