PETER C. LEIDICII, OF TAMAQUA, PENNSYLVANIA.
' BOX-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 616,624, dated December 27, 1898.
Application filed January 30, 1897. Serial No. 621,316. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER O. LEIDICH, a resident of Tamaqua, in the county of Sch u ylkill and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box- Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in latches, and more particularly to such as are adapted for the covers of boxes and crates; and the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional view of a portion of a box, showing the application of my improved latch thereto. Fig. 2 is a detail view showing the keeper.
A represents one side of a box or crate, B the cover, and (J my improved latch device. The latch device is composed of wire and comprises a comparatively long arm a, bent at its upper end to form a triangular loop or hook I). The free end of the wire after being bent around the arm a under the hookb, as shown in Fig. 1, is made to project practically at right angles therefrom and terminates in a loop or thumb-piece c, normally disposed in an opening (I in the front side of the box or crate.
The lower end of the arm a of the latch device is bent at rightangles and driven through the front side of the crate and its extremity clenched. The lower end of the arm a is further secured to the crate by means of a staple a driven through the front side thereof and clenched. The movement of the latch is limited in one direction by the engagement of the hook Z) with the inner face of the front of the box or crate, and will be limited in the other direction by means of an elongated staple f, secured to the front of the box or crate intermediate of the ends of the arm a of the latch. The keeper 9 of the latch device is secured to the cover of the box or crate and depends therefrom, said keeper being composed of a piece of stout wire, U-shaped in general form, and comprising upright arms h and a connecting-bar 'i, the latter being unent of the keeper.
preferably slightly curved. The upper portions of the arms h of the keeper are bent laterally and then upwardly to form shoulders j, which bear against the under face of the cover and serve to prevent any upward move- The upper portions h of the arms hare passed up through the cover and the free ends bent over or clenched, so as to prevent any downward displacement of the keeper. The keeper will thus be held firmly secured to the cover and its displacement either vertically or laterally will be effectually prevented.
Having fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with a box and a cover therefor, of a latch device comprising a latch and a keeper, said latch being composed of a single piece of wire bent at its upper end to form a loop or hook and a loop or thumbpiece, the other end of the latch being secured to the box and a stop or elongated staple secured to the box intermediate of the ends of the latch and serving to limit the movement of the latter, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination with a box having a hole therein and a cover, of a latch device comprising a latch and a keeper, said latch consisting of a piece of wire secured at one end to the box and having the other end bent to form a loop or hook, then bent to encircle the body of the latch and then bent to form a loop terminating in the hole in the box, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination with a box and a cover, of a latch secured to the box and a keeper secured to the cover, said keeper having parallel members bent outwardly to form shoulders bearing against the under face of the cover and having portions at the outer ends of said shoulders passing through the cover and bent over, and an inwardly-curved crossbar connecting said parallel members, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
