PATENT OFFICE.V
EDWARD A. PAGE'E BERLIN HEIGHTS, oEIo.'A
BO'X-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 633,896, dated September 26, 1899. Application filed lday 15,1899. Serial No. 716,825. {No model.)
To all 1071/0711, t 11i/@y concern:
Be itknown that'LEDWARD A. PAGE, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Berlin Heights, in the county of Erie and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box-Fasteners; and I do.
exact description of the invention, such as Will enable others skilled in the art to v.which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. v i cMyinventionrelates to an improvementin box-fasteners- The object herein sought to be attained is to provide simple yet efficient means for holding and locking the covers of egg-crates and berry and other boxes when closed and to prevent substitution' or mixing of the covers by commission merchants and othersvwlien returning the empty crates or boxes g and it consists in the arrangement and combination of parts, which will be more f nlly described hereinafter. i
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a View in perspective of a box having a hinged cover and my fastener in service. Fig. 2 represents a vertical longitudinal section ofthe same box. Fig. 3 is an end view of a portion of the box, showing the fastener locked in place. Fig. 4 represents a detail view of the fastener, Y Y
Similar letters and figures of reference when they occur indicate corresponding parte in all views.
Referringto the drawings, A represents the box, which'is preferably providedva'cross one. end thereof Witha plain cleat ct and across its opposite end with a cleat a', having a vertical-Y groove cd. Y
B designates the cover, which is longer than the box, and to'the under side of one of the projecting ends of said cover B is secured a plain cleat b, and to the under side of the opposite end thereof is fastened a cleat b', having a Wide recess b2 out therein, as best shown in Figs. 1 and 3.
In Fig. 2 is shown one way of` hinging the coverB to the box A, the hinges C being secured by screws or equivalent device tothe plain cleats b and a. This hingingis done to prevent substitution of the covers by cornmission merchants and others when returning the enipties, an annoyance quite universal.
The ,fastener D consists, preferably, of a pieceof suitable spring-wire, which is first .doubled upon itself and then arranged and treated to form a curved handle portion l, a pair of oppositely-disposed shoulder or holdling port-ions 2,' parallel shank portions 3, two coiled portions 4, and end portions or terminais 5, and vin order that the tips X of these end portions 5 may be rendered less brittle and be more easily clenched or bent when desired to hold the said fastener D tightly in place, substantially as indicated by the dotted lines seen in Fig. 3, I anneal them. ln the under side of cleat a' on each side of its vertical groove a? is driven a small staple E to serve The vtop portions 5 of the spring-fastener D.
are inserted in holes F, formed in the cleat b', and so fastened therein that the coils 4c of Said fastener D will snugly lie in the Wide recess b2 thereof and be protected from injury thereby, It is also evident that the vertical groove a2 will accommodate the Shanks 3 of the said fastener D. Y
The box may be readily openedby pulling the handle portion l slightly outward and then' raising the cover, and when properly arranged and adjusted the said fastener Eis self-locking when the cover is depressed.
lf a removable cover is desired, the hinges C and their cleats may be dispensed with and thefastener D and its cleats a. and li' substituted therefor and used in lieu thereof.
It isrmy intention to manufacture cleat b', carrying fastener D, andcleat a', carrying staples E, in quantities for the trade, to be applied Vto suitable boxes by the users.
I do not Wish tobe understood as confining myself to the exact con struction herein shown, as the device may be made in a number of Ways without departing from the spirit and purpose of my invention,
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a box-fastener, a box provided with a cleat upon one end, and which cleat is pro- IOO vided with a vertical groove through which the shank of the fast-ener extends, and a. cleat upon the end of the cover having a recess formed in its lower edge above the groove in the cleat upon the box, Combinedwth a, l spring-fastener formed from a, single piece of A wire having a head upon its lower end, a 1 shank which extends through the groove in i the ole-at on the box, ft spring formed near l the upper end of the wire and having anhealed points or tips Whit-h are forced through l the cleat on the cover; the spring portion of I the fastener being located in the recess in the lower edge of the Cleat upon the cover; and
the staples behind which the head of the 15 EDWARD A. PAGE.
