L.MUTHER. FOLDING GUIDE FOR SEWING MACHINES. ,324.
Patented. June 7 abhor/wag UNITED STATES A PATENT O F CE.
LORENZ MUTHER, 0F OAK PARK, ILLINOIS, ASsIeNoR To THE UNION SPECIAL SEWING MACHINE COMPANY, OFCI-IIQAGO, ILLINOIS.
FOLDING-GUIDE FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 605,324, dated June 7, 1898.
Application filed February 10, 1896. Serial No. 578,725. (No model.) 7
To all whom it may concern:
Be it kn own that I, LORENZ MUTHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oak Park, in the county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improve-' ments in Folding-Guides, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to sewing-machines, and particularly to an improvement in folding-guides.
In the use of a folding-guide for making ing goods of the ordinary thickness and particularly heavy jean goods the edges will curl up and prevent the formationof a neat seam.
The object of the present invention therefore is to provide a supplemental foldingguide which may be moved into position and guide the upper layer of goods when an ordinary welt-seam is to be made, but which may be moved out of the way of the operator when thickened portions of the seam are to be folded.
The invention consists in the matters hereinafter described, and referred to in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a sewingmachine with my improved folder attached. Fig. 2 is a side view of the folder, showing the supplemental part elevated out of the way of the operator. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section;
In the drawings the parts of the sewingmachine are of usual construction and need not herein be especially referred to by letters, and said machine may be either single or multiple needle and have a cylindrical or flat 7 As stated hereinbefore, in certain classes of goods and where the usual thickness is being sewed there is danger, by reason of the size of the space cl, of curling of the goods, and to obviate this a supplemental foldingguide 0 is provided. This has a curved space d, adapted for the reception of the upper layer of fabric, and this space, while regis= tering with the space din the folder B, is considerably smaller and not adapted to receive any increased thickness of material, and therefore when seams are to be crossed must be moved out of the way by the operator. To provide for. readily swinging it out of the way, it is provided with a bent flange f, formed with eyes adapted to embrace a pintle g on the plate h, screwed to the main folder B. A stop '5 is provided to limit the movement of the hinged folder C.
. Various modifications and changes in the construction of this device may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A folding device comprising a base-p1ate having attaching means and carrying a folding-guide, and'a supplemental guide hinged to the main guide and havingits guidingchannel when in operative position in longi tudinal alinement with the I guiding-channel of the main guide and being of the same character as the latter, but of a smaller caliber, substantially as described.
2. A folding device comprising a base-plate 5 having attaching means and carrying a foldnel when in operative-position in longitudiing-guide, a plate removably secured to said folding-guide, a supplemental guide hinged to said plate and having its guiding-channal alinement with the guiding-channel of IO
