ROBERT W. S. MITCHELL AND JOHN MURPHY, OF PASSAIO, NEW JERSEY.
EDGE-FOLDER FOR FABRICS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 519,131, dated May 1, 1894.
Application filed May 11, 1893- Serial No. 473,758. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, ROBERT W. S. MITCH- ELL and JOHN MURPHY, subjects of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Passaic, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Edge-Folders for Fabrics; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to edge folders for fabrics, preparatory to hemming and will be hereinafter more particularly described in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification Figure 1 is a plan view of the blank from which the folders are formed. Fig. 2 is a plan view of one folder produce the lip g; two counterpart parallel slots 0 c, by which the folder is adj ustably secured in working position, are located adjacently t0 the upper left corner of the body 0.
In forming the folder 0 the blank is manipulated as follows: Part dis folded so as to lie closely beneath part c, by being bent upon itself, as indicated by the dotted line wx; these parts are then folded so as to rest slightlyabove part f by being benton line y-y; and in like manner part g is folded so as to extend above the edge of part f by being bent on line e--z, and loosely inclose the corresponding edge of part e between it and said part f; to complete the folder the several parts thus rolled as described are finally folded over the body 0 of the device. It being desired to neatly fold the edges of a piece of fabric for the purpose of hemming, the material is first turned by hand overthe tail piecee of the folder (Fig. 2), said tail piece serving not only as a gage to determine the width of the hem, but also as a guide to facilitate the entrance of the material. The lip 9 within the device completes a double hem fold, the initial fold being imparted by the tail-piece e.
The device is adapted to. be attached to sewing machines, to prepare the fabric for receiving the sewing operation.
We are aware of the patents granted respectively to Caswell on the 19th day of August, 187 3, No. 141,993; Baird on the 26th day of September, 1882, No. 264,845, and Brady on the 12th day of December, 1882, No. 268,779,
and disclaim the same. 1
Having thus fully described our improvement, What we claim is- In edge folders for fabrics the blank herein shown and described consisting of the feetangular body 0 and the tail piece e constructed integrally, the tail piece being axially perpendicular with the body; the recess 19 formed in the body 0 approximately centrally having a wide opening on the top and the Walls gradually converging toward the bottom, the opposite vertical walls having their lines of curvature approximately concentric so as to produce the lip g; and the two counterpart, parallel slots 0 0 located adj acently to the upper left corner of the body 0 as shown.
In testimony whereof we affix our signature in presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT W. S. MITCHELL. JOHN MURPHY.
