IMPROVEMENT lN NECK-TIE FOLDERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 207,288, dated August 20, 1878; application filed June 1, 1878.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAMI A. LAVERTY,

H of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding NeckrTies and Scarfs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled"'in tl1 e art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings," which form part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of my invention, with the material of which the neck-tie is composed in position ready for folding. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, showing the tie folded and in position to be pressed, and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the tie.

My invention has for its object to provide means for rapidly and very effectively molding or folding tycoon neck-ties or scarfs.

Myimprovements consist in the method hereinafter described for folding such neck-ties and scarfs and. in the provision of a mold or former whereby such method is carried into effect.

Heretofore the method generally or universally adopted for folding these articles was by hand, and was alike tedious and uncertain, the extent or line of fold being regulated by the eye, and being, on this account, subject to variation, the folding over being accomplished by the operators fingers, thus requiring the latter to be run along the entire length of the tie in order to effect such folding.

For this hand method I substitute a process or modeof operation wherein are employed a gage for adjusting the extent or determining the line of fold and a mold or former provided with rigid plates, which, upon due and proper manipulation, will in one motion or movement fold the tie its entire length.

In the accompanying drawing, A indicates a base-board, along one edge of which is fastened, by tacks or other appropriate means, a strip of muslin or textile material, B, which latter is of or about the same width as said board A. To the other and opposite edge of said strip B, and on the upper side thereof, is fastened a narrow plate, 0, of zinc or other rigid material, of slightly less width than the folds of the tie which is to be folded.

to allow the passage of pins to a, which are fastened in the base-board A, and serve to keep said strip and the plate 0 in position on said base-board.

D is another thin plate of zinc or rigid matcrial, about one-third wider than the plate 0, and a a. are pins, between which and the pins to a said plate rests in such manner as to be easily turned or folded, as hereinafter de scribed. E E are gage-lines on the textile strip B, parallel with the edge of the plate 0, and distant from said plate one and a half time the width of the plate D.

The operation is as follows: The material to be folded into a tie (shown at F) is laid on the strip B and plate 0, as shown in Fig. 1, its points f f on the gage-lines E E. The plateD is now laid on said material F. resting between the pins to a a a. The plate 0 is then turned over on the plate D, producing the first fold in the tie. The plates 0 and D together, with the material F between them, are then turned over twice, or folded in the direction of the fastened edge of the strip B. This completes the folding of the tie inthe first instance. To set the folds, a hot iron is passed over the plates G D while in their folded position, with the tie between them. The tie may be then removed by reversing the motions of the plates, and may be refolded in the lines obtained while in the former or molder.

What I claim as my invention is 1. A device for folding or molding tycoon neckties, consisting, essential 1y, of rigid plates 0 and D and a hinge-piece or textile strip, B, substantially as shown and described.

2. In combination with-rigid plates 0 1D and a textile strip or hinge-piece, B, the gage E, substantially as shown and described.

3. In combination with the textile strip B and plate 0, the baseboard A, substantially as shown and described.

4. The combination of base-board A, textile strip or hinge-piece B, plates 0 D, and pinsa a a a, substantially as shown and described.
