M. TOBENER'. FABRIC FOLDING ATTACHMENT FOR SEWING MACHINES.
No. 511,977; Patented Jan. 2. 1894.
r w W a wane/sow UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARY TOBENER, OF GOLD HILL, NEVADA.
FABRIC-FOLDING ATTACHMENT FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 511,977, dated January 2, 1894.
Application filed July 26, 1893.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MARY TOBENER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Gold Hill, in the county of Storey and State of Nevada, have invented certain new-and useful Improvements in Sewing-Machine Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to sewing machine attachments of that class known as folder or seam finishers, and has for its object to fold or finish a seam by asimple construction and arrangement of. parts, which are readily attachable or detachable to and from a sewing machine.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists of the construction and arrangement of the several parts, which will be more fully herginafter described and claimed.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the improved attachment applied in operative position. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the attachment disconnected, and shown on a larger scale. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 0ca; Fig. 2. Fig. t is a transverse section on the line y-y, Fig. 6. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of a piece of fabric which has been folded by the attachment. Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the device.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral l designates an arm, having a loop or sleeve 2 at one end' thereof, in which is fitted a removable fastening screw 3, having a portion of its shank smooth and not threaded. This construction is for the purpose of securing the attachment to a sewing machine but it is to be understoodthat no stress is to be laid upon this arrangement, as any preferred means may be employed for applying the attachment. The arm 1 is positioned in the proper plane and at the proper angle to ac- Serial No. 481,524. (No model.)
commodate the attachment and operation of the device, and at its free end is secured a conical shaped folding sleeve 4:, with a slot 5 extending the full length of one side thereof. Within the said conical sleeve is a divider 6, formed by inturning the edges of the said sleeve on the side opposite that to which the slot is formed, and the said divider stands away from the side of the sleeve in which the said slot is located. The divider extends through the larger end of the sleeve and throughout its length it partakes of the same degree of width proportionately to the increase of the width of the said sleeve from its smaller toward its larger end. The end of the divider which projects through the sleeve is separated and the two parts are bent laterally in opposite directions at slight oblique angles to provide folders or formers 7.
The fabric to be folded has the two edges thereof placed in the slot 5 and is turned and fed to the needle and simultaneously connected to produce the form shown in Fig. 5. It will be seen that this finishes a seam and makes a strong connection without the use of binding. When the two pieces of fabric are inserted in the slot, the edge of each is caused to assume a position on opposite sides of the divider, and as they are drawn under, are turned inward or under, and in this condition are ready to be seamed by the machine.
The attachment entire is simple and effective in its construction and operation, is easily manufactured, and can be readily applied or detached. It is adapted to be used in connection with any form or make of ma chine, and the essential feature of the invention resides in the conical sleeve and the divider therein of the nature set forth.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- In a sewing machine attachment for the purpose set forth, a conical sleeve suitably supported having a dividing partition secured to one of the inner sides of the sleeve and extending toward the opposite inner side thereof, said divider extending through and projecting outwardly from the larger end of said sleeve and tapering proportionately to In testimony whereof I have signed this the taper of the sleeve, with the parts of said specification in the'presence of two subscribfree projecting end extended laterally in oping witnesses.
