- Av e UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. BAKER, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO .WI-IITE SEWING MACHINE COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
C OMBINEDPIPING AND HEMMING ATTACHMENT FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 226,382, dated April 13, 1880.
Application filed October 18, 1879.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE W. BAKER, of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Piping and Hemming Attachment for Sewing-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference bein ghad to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to sewing-machine attachments and it consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter specified and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an isometric view of my device. Fig. 2 is an illustration of a specimen of work done by my device. Fig. 3 is a section view of the specimen shown in Fig.2, with the needle shown as passing through in the act of sewing. Fig. 4 is an end and bottom view of a part of the device. I The attachment is adapted to be connected to a sewing-machine in the same manner that the presser-foot is usually connected and to this end its upright portion B is provided with a collar and set-screw, as shown at A. The horizontal portion B of the attachment is provided with a hemmer, C, which may be of any suitable construction. The folder D,
formed as a horizontal tube having one slitted side, is located immediately in front of the hemmer.
The operation of my device is as follows: A strip of cloth, D, is fed to the device D, whereby it is folded upon itself in the direction indicated in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
After being thus bent it is laid beneath the fold of the hem C, as indicated in the drawings, after which the parts are sewed together in the mannor indicated in Fig. 3. In this figure of the F is the needle-hole, through which the needle passes in sewing together the hem C and folded strip D. i
What 1 claim is- 1. The combination of the folder D with the hemmer C, constructed and arranged substantially as shown, whereby the strip D is folded and laid within the hem C, substantially as and for the purpose shown.
2. A sewing-machine attachment consisting of a frame, B, to which are attached the hemmer C and folder D, the folder D being lo cated in advance of the hemmer 0, whereby the strip D is first folded upon itself and then laid within the hem C, substantially asand for the purpose shown.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE W. BAKER.
