UNITE-D STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM BowMAN, oF MILL. GRovE, MICHIGAN.
. FENCE-Pos1'. ,l
SPECIFICATION forming part vof Letters Patent NO. 603,166, dated April 26, 1898. Application led ITovember 26, 189V7. Serial No. 659,897. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM BOWMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mill Grove, in the county of Allegan and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Posts; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to' which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to fence-posts; and it 'consists of the construction and arrangement of the several parts, which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of the invention is to provide a fence-post having an indestructible base and an attachment whereby Wooden pieces may be secured to and extend above the surface of the ground and which may have substituted therefor similar pieces in the event of breakage, decay, or rotting of the same.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view showing the fence-post in operative position. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section through the device shown by Fig. ll. Fig. 3` is a plan of `a part of the de- Referring to the drawings, wherein similar numerals of reference arelemployed to indicate corresponding parts in the several views, the numeral l designates a cast-metal base of suitable length and dimensions and adapted to be preferably made hollow, though a departure from the spirit of the invention would not exist if the same were made solid. At the upper portion of one side of the base a wroughtmetal socket 2 is secured and has openings extending therethrough and through the adjacent portion of the said base and is adapted to receive the lower end of a wooden post 3 and be held in connection therewith by means of bolts or other fastenings 4. The wooden post is removable and may at any time be replaced by another of a similar nature When found necessary, and the socket is sufficiently long to provide a rigid support for the lower end of the wooden post. In setting up the device' the'base 1 is embedded in the ground kin a vertical position, together with the socket,
if desired, ori the said socket may with a por- 5o tion of the base extendabove the ground, this being regulated in accordance with the position of the post and the requirements of the person using the device. The wooden 'post 1 of course is intended to be held above- 55 ground, and the base is made angular in crosssection, so as to prevent the same-from turning, and when made hollow, to give the same suliicient weight to sustain a stable position thereof, it can receive a filling of suitable ma- 6o .terial, such as dirt, sand, or the like.
The base l can be easilyset up in operative position, and as an additional safeguard it could be coated with a paint or covering of such nature las to prevent corrosion. making the socket of wrought metal a greater strain will be resisted thereby.
Many advantages will become apparent to those using the device, and itis obviously apparentthat many minor changes in the de- 7o tails of construction and arrangement of the several parts may be made and substituted for those shown and described without in the least departing from the nature or spirit of the invention. -l l Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is-V A fence-post comprising a base having an independent socket on one side of the upper portion thereof, the said base being of=cast 8o metal and the socket of wrought metal, a post removably fitted in said socket, and bolts passed through the socket-post and the adjacent wall of the base and holding the several parts in removable relative `position to each 85 other, the said base being hollowand adapted to bey filled with suitable weighting material, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I afxmy signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM BOWMAN.
