A PM 2? UNITED STATES- PATENT OFFICE.
JARVIS A. DAUGHERTY, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
FENCE-POST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 415,266, dated November 19, 1889.
Application filed May 13, 1889- To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that 1, JARVIS A. DAUGHERTY, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence or other Posts, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in fence, lamp, or other posts, and has for its object to insure a firm achorage thereto and to enable a series of panels of wire fencing, stretched and gaged for use, to be easily transported and adjusted to the posts Wherever the latter may have been previously fixed.
It consists in a post having a detachable bar or portion, combined with other features of novelty, as hereinafter claimed.
On the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a front elevation of two of my improved posts as applied to a wire fence, (one post partly in section Fig. 2, a side view of one of the posts (partly broken away) at right angles to Fig. 1; Figs. 3, 4, 5, and 6, transverse sections thereof, to an enlarged scale, on lines 1 1, 2 2, 3 3, and 4 4, respectively, in Fig. 1; Fig. 7,a modification of my invention as applied to an ornamental paling, lamp, or other post; and Fig. 8, a plan thereof, to an enlarged scale, omitting the superstructure.
Like letters of reference denote like parts in the respective figures.
(t represents a fence-post which for its entire height from the base-piece b is preferably of a semi-diamond or square shape with flattened corners in cross-section, but-may be made semicircular, oval, rectangular, or otherwise, as desired.
The post a is preferably made in one piece with the base I), which projects beyond the post a on one side, so as to form a shoulder I) at the foot of the post a, as seen more particularly in Fig. 2. From the base 1) depends the shank 0, around which is formed or secured a screw-blade (or thread) (Z, whereby, on turning the post a, the base I), with its shank c, is caused to enter the ground, and when at the proper level there is placed around the base 1), preferably, a sleeve e, from which project horizontally and at right angles (or inclined) to each other four (more or less) ribs Serial No. 310,588. (No model.)
or Wings f, the sleeve 6 being secured to the base I) by screws e or otherwise, so that on dumping the ground around the sleeve e and between the wings f the post a is prevented from lateral play and firmly anchored in position.
Against each post a for its entire height on that side overlying the shoulder 12' of the base I) is fitted, with its lower end butting upon the shoulder 19, a detachable bar 9, to a series of which, when separate from the posts a, the wires h of the fence, previously stretched, are gaged and loosely held by staples i or other device for facility of transportation, so that, on the bars g being adjusted to the distances between the posts a and fixed to the latter by bolts j, the wires h are finally secured to the bars 9 by driving home the staples '11, thereby forming a continuous wire fence With out unnecessary breaks, which can be readily and quickly fixed.
lnthe case of aboard fence the ends of the boards may be nailed either with lap or butt joints to the respective bars 9 of the posts a, so that any portion of the fence can be removed by detaching the bars 9 without disturbing the posts a.
In the modification of my invention seen in Figs. 7 and 8 the fixed part a is shortened to within a suitable distance from the base I) and the detachable portion or ornamental post a secured to the fixed part a with its lower end bearing upon the upper collar or shoulder 12 of the base b and upon the upper edges of the webs or wings f, which in this case are shown dovetailed into the base b without the sleeve 6 shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 5, although the latter arrangement may be used if preferred.
I claim 1. The combination, in a fence-post, of a section having a ground point and a shoulder,
a detachable section adapted to rest on the shoulder of the ground-point section, and a base-collar adapted to slip over the post above the point, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. The combination ,with afencepost section having a screw-point and a shoulder or offset above the same, of a detachable post-section and a collar-base adapted to fit .011 the postsections above the screw-point, substantially as and for the purposes described.
3. In a fence-post, the combination of a base-piece having a screwed shank and a shoulder on one side of the post, a sleeve adapted to the base-piece, and having Webs or wings, with a detachable bar, substantially as shown and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, I O in presence of two witnesses, this 13th day of April, 1889. 7
JARVIS A. DAUGHERTY..
Witnesses:
