FENCE-POST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 516,232, dated March 13, 1894.
Application filed June 10, 1893.
.To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, CHARLES SLIKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Posts; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure 1, is a view showing a portion of a fence and illustrating the posts. Fig. 2, is a view showing transverse section of the posts and illustrating the fence boards properly attached. Fig. 3, is a view showing transverse section of the posts and illustrating rails attached thereto. Fig. 4, is a transverse section showing the post enlarged. Fig. 5, is a detached sectional view of the nailing strip a and its clamping bolt. Figs. 6 and 7 are views of the posts proper. Fig. 8 is a longitudinal section showing a portion of a post and illustrating the nailing strip properly attached.
The present invention has relation to fence posts and it consists in the different parts and combination of parts hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawlngs.
In the accompanying drawings A represents the posts which are formed of burnt clay. The posts A are formed from plastic clay, after which they are properly burned in a kiln. The posts A are preferably formed triangular in cross section substantially as illustrated in the drawings, and are so formed for the purpose of reducing the amount of material and at the same time to give the posts the desired amount of strength. Upon one side of the post A is located the groove a which groove is formed by sinking a portion of the side as shown in the drawings thereby maintaining the same thickness of the shell. The back of the groove a is provided with the T shaped openings b. Three openings are shown in Fig. 6; but it will be understood that the number of openings may be varied Without departing from the nature of my invention. The nailing strip B is formed of Serial Ila 77,197. (No model.)
such a size that it will fit the groove aand of a length to correspond substantially with the length of the post, except the portion of post below the ground. To the nailing strip Bare attached the clamping bolts 0, the inner ends of which are provided with the heads d and the outer ends with the screw threaded nuts d. In use the heads 61 of the clamping bolts are passed through the large part of the shaped openings after which the nailing strip B, together with all of the clamping bolts 0 is pressed or forced downward, thereby br1nging the heads 61 below the large part of the opening b, and the shanks of the clamplng bolts 0 into the narrow portions of the T shaped openings b. For the purpose of tightening the nailing strips B after they have been pressed downward the screw threaded nuts are turned up against the outer face of the nailing strips. The fence boards d are properly nailed to the nailing strips B, thereby completing the fence.
If it is desired to use bars such as C 1n the construction of fences, the posts A are provided with the openings D, and the ends of the bars properly entered through the openings D.
It will be understood that other forms of posts may be used Without departing from the nature of my invention; but I prefer the triangular form, for the reasons above stated.
It will be understood that by my peculiar manner of attaching the nailing strips B, to the posts A they can be easily attached and detached.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the post A, formedtriangular in cross section, and provided with the groove (1, the nailing strip 13 provided with the clamping bolts 0, the T shaped openings b, and the openings D, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
