Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FREDERICK GRAND- JEAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alexander, in the county of Morgan and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fence-Posts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved fence post comprising a concrete base, a reinforcing member embedded in the base and extending from the upper end thereof and a detachable upper post member which may be made of wood or iron and which is secured on the upper end of the base by the reinforcing member, the object of the invention being to efi'ect improvements in the construction of the base and of the upper post member whereby the latter is caused to be firmly clamped to the upper member and to the upper end of the base, when secured to the reinforcing member.
The invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a vertical central sectional view of a fence post constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail elevation of the upper post member. Fig. 3 is a detail elevation of the base, at right angles to Fig. l.
The concrete base 1 may be of the form here shown or of any other suitable form and is provided with a reinforcing iron 2 which is vertically arranged and the lower portion of which isembedded in the center of the base, the upper portion of the reinforcing iron extending above the center of the base. The upper end of the base is beveled on opposite sides to form upwardly converging inclined surfaces 3.
The upper post member 4 may be made of wood, iron or other suitable material and may if desired be tubular. In accordance with my invention the upper post member is provided at its lower end with a vertical split or kerf 5 whereby jaws 6 are formed on opposite sides of the kerf. The lower ends of the jaws are beveled as at 7 and converge upwardly. The kerf 5 is wedge shaped, its sides converging upwardly and its lower end being wider than its upper end.
To secure the upper member 4 on the base it is arranged on the upper end of the base with the upper portion of the reinforcing iron 2 extending into a central bore or recess 8 with which the member 4 is provided and which is coincident with the center of the kerf 5. Bolts 9 are passed through transverse alining openings with which the jaws 6 and the reinforcing member 2 are provided and as the nuts of said bolts are tightened they draw the jaws 6 toward each other and against the reinforcing member and also cause the beveled lower end 7 of said jaws to be firmly clamped on and against the inclined upper surface 3 of the base. Hence the member 4: is so securely connected to the base that it cannot be moved sidewise and is adapted to withstand all the stresses to which the post is subjected. The provision of the upwardly converging inclined surfaces 3 of the base and the corresponding construction of the lower end of the member I causes rain water, melted snow and the like to be shed from the post at the joint between the base and the upper member so as to cause the said joint to be kept dry and hence prevent the rotting of the post at the joint.
Having thus described my invention, I claim A post comprising a base, having its upper end provided with upwardly converging oppositely inclined surfaces, an attaching member extending up from the center of the base, and an upper post member having a vertical central downwardly widened kerf in its lower end forming jaws on opposite sides of the kerf, said jaws having their lower ends oppositely inclined and converging upwardly and adapted to bear on the inclined upper surfaces of the base, the said attaching member being inserted in the lower end of said upper member, the width of the lower portion of the kerf being greater than the thickness of the attaching member, and said upper member being also provided with clamping bolts to bind the said jaws against opposite sides of the attaching member and also to bind the inclined lower ends of said jaws onthe inclined upper surfaces of the base.
