UNITED STATE-s; PATENT OFFICE- i RANDOLPH R. B`UETo,. oF SLAUGHTER, LOUISIANA'.
FENCE-POST.
Specification of Letters Patent.
l Patented Cet. 16, 1906.
Application filed Junel, 1906. Serial No. 322.110.
To all whom, it may concern,.-
Be it known'that l, RANDOLPH R. BUE'ro, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Slaughter, inthe parish of East Feliciana and State of Louisiana, have made an Imrovenrent in Fence-Posts, of which the folowing is a specification.
My invention is an 'improvement in the class of metallic fence-posts which are pro` vided with means for anchoring them in the ground.
The invention is embodied in the construction, arrangement, and combination 'of parts hereinafter described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, inwhich- Figure l is a perspective view of my `fencepost and the means for anchoring the samek in the ground. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of thepost and the means for anchoring the same in the ground, a Wire fastening being shown in side view.
A indicates a tubular iron post, and B an iron anchoring-plate having a central hole in as indicated in Fig. 2.v The plate B is preferably rectangular, and its ends l) are bent downward and enter the ground, the body of the plate lying upon the top of the ground or being butA slightly embedded in it. The post is provided with a collar a, which rests directly upon the anchor-plate B and supports it thereon,- -the post being easily detachable from the plate B, yet firmly supported when The collar is secured by shrinking it on the post or by any other means which may be preferred.
The post is provided with a series of lengthwise slots a on one side and with opposite holes a2 on the other side. In practice there are as many series of such slots and holes as there are Wires C, and it. will be understood that the slots are necessarily in alinement, as well as the holes a2.
The wire fastenings consist of a screw-bolt D, having one end bent to form a hook d, the
A same being arranged at an acute angle to the body of the bolt to adapt it to hold a wire. The slots a in the post A are adapted to rewith the inclined hook or'prong d, and the holes a2 are similarly adapted to receive the threaded cylindrical end of the bolts. A nut d is applied to the threaded end of each bolt exterior to the post, as shown in Fig. 2.
l claiml. An improved fence-post and means for anchoring it in the ground, the same comprising the post proper and the anchoring-plate having pendent flanges adapted to enter the ground, the post passln through the plate and projecting a considera le distance below it, and being provided with a iixed collar that rests-u on the upper side of the. plate, substantia ly as described.
2. The combination with an anchoringlplate adapted to rest upon thev ground and ceive the head of the bolt, which is provided aving flanges Jfor entering the same, of a post which passes through a hole in the center of the plate and projects a considerable distance below it, the post being provided with a fixed collar that rests upon the plate, the post and plate being readily detachable, substantially as described.
3. The improvement in fence-posts herein described, comprising a base or anchor plate having a central opening and provided at its opplosite' ends with flanges bent down at a rig whereby the iiat edges at the lower ends of the flanges are provided to prevent any rocking or tilting of the plate in the ground, and the post properitting at its lower end Within the opening in the plate and extending below the plate a considerable distance and to a point below' the lower edges of the end flanges and provided above the said plate with an annular collar bearing uniformly upon the base-plate to swing the central opening therein and cooperating with the flat-edged end fianges in preventing any rocking of the plate when in the ground, substantially as set forth.
