FENCE-POST.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. CoNNoRs, a citizen 'of the United States, residing at Helena, in the county of Shelby and State of Alabama, have invented anew and useful Fence-Post, (Case 13,) of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to metal fence posts of that type made up of rolled members constituting a light and inexpensive, but durable structure such as shown for example in my application of even date herewith.
The present invention resides more particularly in the means for binding the post members together and for positively holding them in predetermined relations.
Gne of the objects of the invention is to provide a novel form of core mounted between the post members and through which extend tie bolts which engage said members and bind them together and upon the core.
Another object is to provide improved means for connecting braces to the post and for applying hinge members and the like thereto.
lVith these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a post having the present improvements combined therewith, hinge members and braces being-shown connected thereto and the fence wires being also shown in position. Fig. 2 is a transverse section through the post and showing a brace connected thereto. Fig. 3 is a central transverse section through a core. Fig. 4 is a plan view of a hinge member designed to be used in connection with the post.
Referring to the gures by characters of reference, 1 and 2 designate opposed post members each of which is preferably angular incross section and formed of rolled metal having longitudinal reinforcing ribs 3 suitably located thereon, while longitudinally extending flanges 4 are formed along the side edges of the members and disposed to contact. Either or both of the members is provided with transversely extending slots or kerfs 5 in the angle thereof for the reception of fence wires A, a suitable key 6 being insertible between these wires and Specification of Letters Patent. into the adjoining angle of the post member so as to prevent the. wires from becoming displaced relative to the post. The post is provided at one or more points therein with a core 7 preferably in the form of a hollow rectangular tube designed to lit snugly between the post members and having opposed corner portions cut away as shown at 8 so as to leave the angle portions of the. members clear to receive the fence wires and their keys. Upper and lower bolts 9 are extended through the core at right angles to each other and perpendicularly to the sides of the core, t-hese bolts being also extended through the members 1 and 2 so that when nuts 10 are tightened thereon, the said members are clamped firmly together and upon the core. As shown particularly in Fig. 2 the heads of the bolts may be formed with depressions 11 for the reception of the adjoining reinforcing ribs 3 which thus serve to hold the bolts against rotation after they have been tightene As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, braces 12 may be used in connection with the posts. Each of these braces is preferably made up of a longitudinally channeled rolled metal strip having a forked end 13 designed to embrace the meeting' flanges 4 at one side of the post, one of the members of the fork being extended at an angle so as to fit snugly against one of the faces of a. post member. A depression 14 has been shown in this extended portion 15 of the brace, for the reception of a rib 3, it being understood that one of the bolts 9 is extended through the portion 15 so as to bind it upon the post.
One or more hinge members may be connected to the post, each of these members being preferably formed of a head 16 having a recess 17 designed to receive the meeting flanges of the post members, there being diverging arms 18 extending from the head 16 and arranged to fit snugly against the adjoining faces of the post members. Depressions 19 may be formed within the arms to receive the reinforcing ribs 3 and the bolts 9 are also designed to extend through these arms so as to clamp them upon the post. Each of'these heads 16 may be provided with a pintle 20. If desired an eye-bolt 21 may be utilized for connecting the parts together in lieu of one of the bolts 9, the eye of the bolt constituting means for attaching a stay wire B to the post.
Although only one brace has been shown connected to the post in Fig. 2, it is to be understood that two braces may be attached thereto if desired, the bolts 9 constituting the sole means for fastening them together and said braces being extended at angles to each other.
The post herein described is especially adapted for use as a corner, gate, or strain post. At intermediate points along a fence,V
however, each post can be made up of a single angle iron corresponding with either of the members 1 and 2 heretofore described.

A metal fence post consisting of opposed angular members having longitudinally extending reinforcing ribs, there being longitudinal flanges upon the side edges of the members, the corresponding flanges of the twov members contacting, the lower ends of said members being pointed, and spaced hollow cores interposed between and bearing snugly against the members, each core having a corner portion cut away.
