WIRE ROPE CLAMP. No. 388,840. Patented Sept. 4, 1888.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OLIVER CROSBY, OF ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA.
WIRE-ROPE CLAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 388,840, dated September 4, 1888.
(No Inodehl To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLIVER CROSBY, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of St. Paul, county of Ramsey, State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in VVire-Itope Fastcnings, ofwhich the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in wire rope fastenings, and is especially intended to be used for the purpose of uniting or Splicing two or more ropes.
The object of the invention is to furnish a fastening simple in construction and cheaply made which shall hold the ropes securely to gether without slipping, and which can be applied to ropes whose ends are fast.
The device is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure I represents an elevation of the fastening, showing the ropes clamped in position; and Fig. II, a top view of the same.
Similarletters designate correspondingparts in each figure.
A is a casting having a longitudinally-extending groove formed therein, the said groove being U-shaped in cross-section of a width equal to the diameter of the rope to be clamped, and of a depth to admit two or more ropes therein, one above the other. The bottom of the groove is corrugated to fit the corrugations of the rope It in order to give the same a firm hold upon the clamp. Upon each side of the body of the casting A are lateral bolt-lugs A A, and the body of the casting in which the groove is formed extends for some distance upon each side and in each direction along the rope, forming the wings B B. The ropes are placed in the groove one above the other, as shown in Fig. I, the wings B B forming a lateral support to retain them in place, and they are then clamped by means of the U-shaped bolt O,crossing the mouth of the groove and passing through the lugs A A, and furnished at the ends with screw threads and nuts II H.
It will be observed that by tightening the nuts II II the ropes are securely clamped together against the back of the casting and the ropes are so tightly compressed that the corrugations of the ropes unite with each other in such a manner that it is impossible for one rope to slip upon the other, and the rope which bears against the casting being also compressed into the corrugations at the bottom of the groove it is impossible for any slipping to take place.
ly my invention constructed above described, ropes can be easily and quickly spliced or clamped together at any point, even though the ends are fast, and the ropes being compressed closely together in a single groove, there is but little side strain upon the clamp, as is the case when each rope is clamped in a. separate groove.
I am aware of Patents Nos. 249,381 and 125,789, and do not claim anything therein shown.
I claim as my invention In a wire-rope fastening, a casting having a groove therein of a depth to receive two or more ropes, one above the other, longitudinally-extending wings forming the sides of the groove, bolt-lugs outside of said wings, and a U-bolt passing over and across said groove and through said lugs and furnished with screw threads and nuts at the ends, substantially as and for the purpose herein specified.
OIIII ER CROSBY.
