A. SHRADER.
PORTABLE FENCE.
Patented July 3, 1888.
ADAM SHRADER, 0F JUSTUS, OHIO.
PORTABLE FENCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 385,531, dated July 3, 1888.
Application filed April 5, 1888.
To all whom, it may4 concern:
Be it known that I, ADAM SHRADER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Justus, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Fences; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the saine, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation showing portions of panels placed together and one of the supporting-posts removed. Fig. 2 is a view` showing section of the panel-|ooards and the su p porting-postsin proper position to securely hold the panels. Fig. 8 is a View showing the supporting-posts open. Fig. 4. is a view showing the supporting-posts and sill adapted to a hillside. Fig. 5 is a view showing the supporting-posts adjusted for the reception of rails. Figs. 6, 7, and 8 are views ofthe locking end of fence-board and a portion of sill with notch. Fig. 9 is a top view of two panelboards lapped together. Fig. 10 is a side View of one of the panelboards designed to be used in locking the panels together.
The present invention has relation to fences, and it consists in the di'erent parts and combinations of parts, hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the supporting-posts, which are pivotally bolted to the sill B, and when boards are to oe used in the construction of the fence proper the supporting-posts are attached, as illustrated in Figs. 2, 3, and 4. These posts A are provided with notches a, which are for the purpose ofreceiving the ends of the boards b, as illustrated in the drawings. The top or upper ends of the supporting posts A are spread or parted, as shown in Fig. 3, when it is desired to enter the panels, and after said panels are properly entered they are securely locked by means of the link c, which is forced down one of the inclined shoulders d until one end engages the notch d', as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 5, the opposite end of thelink c engaging the shoulder or projection d2, thus securely locking the different parts together.

portingposts in an upright position the wires C are provided, which are located substantially as shown in the drawings. These wires are preferably formed into links, which embrace the sill and supportingposts. The strain of these wires is regulated by placing them in the notches c, the wires being drawn or forced to the desired notch. A number of notches are located in the supporting-posts. and sills. When it is desired to construct a fence upon a hillside, the different parts are adjusted substantially as illustrated in Fig. 4, the wires being adjusted so as to securely hold the supporting-posts in an upright position. In case it is desired, notches may be provided to receive the rails D and hold them apart. These rails, in case notches are. used, should lap at their sides instead of on top of each other, thereby permitting a fence to be constructed upon a hillside.
The sills B are provided at their ends with the blocks E, which are for the purpose of supporting said sills and assisting in holding them in proper position. For the purpose of locking the panels endwise the notchesf are provided, which are so adjusted that when the panels are properly lapped said notches will come together; as illustrated in Fig. 9. The key g is. placed in these notches and securely held in proper position by the edges of the supporting-posts A. This key will also hold the panels and supportingposts in an upright position, the ends of the key abutting against the edges of the supporting-posts.
Having fully described myinvention, what I ADAM SHEADER.
