F. MEDART. HORIZONTAL BAR EXBRGISING APPARATUS.
Patented May 24, 1892.
ATTEST:
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK MEDART, OF S'l. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
HORIZONTAL-BAR EXERCISING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent NO. 475,697', dated May 24, 1892. Application led Ang-ust l0, 189]. Serial No. 402,297. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK MEDART, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missourhhave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ilorizontal-Bar Exercising Apparatus; andldo hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in horizontal-bar exercising apparatus for gymnasiums.
The object of the present improvements is to provide an improved construction of such apparatus embodying the features of a firm and substantial attachment of the vertical posts or uprights to the gymnasium-floor in a manner to admit of their ready removal when required, means for effecting an adjustment of the posts or uprights to a true Vertical position, and a simple and efficient construction of the socket, whereby it can be readily adapted to the iioor of a gymnasium in a manner to admit of the shrinkage of the joists thereof being compensated for. I attain such objects by the construction and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a sectional elevation of a horizontal-bar exercising apparatus constructed in accordance with my present invention; Fig. 2, a horizontal section at line c ai; Eig. 3, a plan view ot' the bottom of the socket-casting and its connections; Fig. 4, a detail sectional elevation of a modification.
Similar figures of reference indicate like parts in the different views.
Referring to the drawings, l represents one of the counterpart posts or uprights of the apparatus made of any suitable material and of any suitable cross-section, preferably of channeled iron, in the form of a ribbed letter H in cross-section, as shown in Fig 2, for the double purpose of affording ample strength with eXtreme lightness and at the same time provide vertical channels to receive the ends to the horizontal bar 2 in its dilferent vertical adjustments in use, such horizontal bar being secured to the required and 2.) The lower end of each post l is formed with a tapering end 5, which at its union with the main body of the post preferably forms a supporting shoulder or offset G, as illustrated in Fig. l. The web of the post is formed with a vertical series of apertures 6o '7 for the double purpose of lightness and to afford means for the engagement of a pry or lever in removing the post from its receivingsocket in the floor of the gymnasium. The
floor-socket may consist of a single casting,
as indicated in Fig. 4, this form being adaptede for a limited use in gymnasiums located on the ground fioorwhere the sockets will be required to be set in the earth in a suitable cement bedding. The more extended use of 7o my invention will, however, be in connection with the floors of gymnasiu ms, and as so used the floor-socket will consist of an upper and lower member Sand 9, secured, respectively,
in a recess in the flooring and to the bottom of the floor-joists, and substantially connected together by tie-bolts l0, as shown. The upper socket member 8V is formed with a surface recess ll of a somewhat greater area than that of the post, so as to readily receive lSo the horizontallyadj ustable bolts l2 in the post and form an abutmentfor the same as they are screwed in or out to effect the proper vertical adjustment of the post, as well as the securing ofthe same solidly in an erect position. The
lower socket is provided with rabbets 13, that enter gains cut in the joists, as shown, so as to better retain its proper position, and is provided with a downwardly-extending sleeve 14, through which the series of radial hori- 9o zontally-arran ged ad justing-screws 15 pass to engage and adjust the eXtreme lower en'd of the post. Y
The means of adjustment described is a very valuable feature of construction in that it affords means for adjustment, when from any accidental causes-such as shrinkage of the floorandjoists, &c.-an adjustment of the posts or uprights is necessitated. Such means are not, however, absolutely requisite and roo dass? may be dispensed with and a very useful construction still provided.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a horizontal-bar exercising apparatus for gymnasiums, the combination ofa postl or upright l, having horizontal screws l2, andthe floorsoeket provided with a surface recess 11 to receive the same, substantially as set forth.
lower end of the post or upright, substantially as set forth.
L In a horizontal-bar exercising apparatus' for gymnasiums, the combination, with the Hoor-socket, of a post or upright having a ribbed letter H formation, the flan gesof which are formed with a vertical series of holes 4 for effecting an adjustment of the end ofthe horizontal bar, substantially as set forth.
5. In ahorizontal-bar exercising apparatus for gymnasiums, the combination, with the floor-socket, of a post or upright having a ribbed letter H formation, the Web of which is formed with a vertical series of apertures 7, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FREDERICK MEDART.
