FENCE POST.
Patented Dec. 5, 1876.
@EUR
'UNITED STATES PATENT QEEIOE.
HARRISON EITTS, OE HOLLIN, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN FENCE-POSTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 185,022, dated December 5, 1876; application led August 7, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRISON FITTS, of
l Rollin, in the county ot' Lenawee and State Of- Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Fence-Post, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved fence-post; and Fig. 2 is a section of the same, taken on line .c .c in Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The invention is an improvement in the class of cylindrical Or tubular iron fence-posts; and consists in forming a hollow p'ost flat on one side and cylindrical on the other, and providing it with a foot -having the shape of a cross, as hereinafter described.
A is a post, made from cast or wrought iron, having a semi-cylindrical form, and is made slightly conical. At B are mortises,
made in the post to receive the boards C, the ends of which abut in the center of the post. The portion Ot' the post that is inserted in the earth consists Of four Wings, c b c d, arranged at right angles to each other, as clearly Shown in Fig. 2. Apertures e are made in each of the wings to receive a retaining-pin or a stone, to prevent the post from being raised by the frost. 'f f, 8vo., are apertures made in the upper part of the post to decrease the Weight.
The semi-cylindrical form Ot the post secures maximum strength with minimum Weight, and avoids any considerable projection of one sid-e of the post beyond the side of the fence, so that the least practicable Obstruction is Offered to the Operation of the mowing' Or other agricultural machine. The post is more economical than those made Of cylindrical form, can be more easily handled, and packed in smaller space for transportation, &c.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- Y As a new article Of manufacture, the hollOW semi-cylindrical fence-post, provided with mortises and a cross-shaped foot, as shown and described.
HARRISON FITTS.
