JOHN J. MCCOMISH, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SAFETY-BOTTLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 603,114, dated April 26, 1898.
Application filed April 13, 1897. Serial No. 681,899. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN J. MCCOMISH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York city, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Bottles, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to that class of safetybottles which are designed to prevent the unauthorized reuse and refilling of the bottle, and has for its object to provide a simple and improved safety-bottle of this character which will possess advantages in point of inexpensiveness, extreme simplicity, convenience, safety, ease of operation, and general efficiency.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of the bottle embodying my improvements, the safety attachment being shown in its initial position. Fig. 2 is a corresponding View showing the safety attachment in applied position. Fig. 3 is a corresponding view illustrating a modification.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a bottle which may be of any ordinary or suitable construction.
B designates a rod which comprises myimproved safety attachment and is formed of glass or other fragile material, at the top end of which rod is carried a disk or ball I). The lower end I) of said rod is permanently connected to the neck portion a of the bottle. This connection may be formed by simply welding the end of the rod to the neck, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, or the bottom end of the rod may be Wound spirally around the neck of the bottle, as shown in Fig. 3. Above the secured lower end 1') the top portion of the rod, which carries the disk or ball Z), is free, and the connection between the free portion and the secured lowerend is preferably formed by an outward bend or curve, as shown at c, at which point the diameter of the rod is preferably reduced, as shown.
The operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood.
In practice the bottle is first filled and a cork 0r stopper D of any suitable form ormaterial is inserted in the mouth. The free top portion of the rod 13 is then heated by means of a blow-pipe or any other suitable means and bent over, so that the end disk or ball l) bears upon the top of the stopper I), when the safety-rod is permitted to become set in this position. To enable the withdrawal of the cork or stopper and the use of the contents of the bottle, it will be necessary to break or destroy the fragile safety-rod, which operation may be effected by a slight blow upon the reduced connection portions 0. The glass safety-rod B may be marked in colors throughout its substance or otherwise formed with characteristic or distinguishing features, so that after it is broken to permit the use of the contents of the bottle the repair of the broken part or welding of a new top portion of the rod by unauthorized parties will not be permitted without detection.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a non-refillable bottle, a fragile rod having one end permanently secured to the neck of the bottle, and provided with a free projecting portion carrying an end disk or ball, adapted to bear upon the cork or stopper of the bottle, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In an improved safety-bottle, a fragile rod having its lower end secured to the bottle and embodying a free projecting portion connected with the secured end by an outward bend or curve of reduced diameter, the projecting portion of said rod carrying a disk or ball at the free end adapted to bear upon the cork or stopper, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. As an improved safety device for a bottle, a fragile rod adapted to be attached to a bottle, having its lower end secured to the neck of the bottle and embodying a free projecting end, said rod embodying a distinctive design, whereby the said rod cannot be broken without destroying the integrity thereof, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two witnesses, this 10th day of April, 1897.
