SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 572,387, dated December 1, 1896.

Application filed April 22, 1896.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that we, MARSTON TEBBErrs and LESLIE W ITING TEBBETTS, citizens of the United States, and residents of San Diego, in the county of San Diego and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

This invention relates to bottles, jugs, jars, and similar vessels; and the object thereof is to provide a vessel of this class with a neck attachment which is so constructed and arranged that when the vessel has been filled and the stopper applied the stopper cannot be removed or the vessel emptied of its contents without leaving evidence of the fact.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the neck of the bottle or other vessel provided with our improvement; Fig. 2, a side view thereof; Fig. 3, a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4: a section on the line 4 4:.

In the practice of our invention we provide a bottle or other vessel having a neck A, in one side of which is formed a circular cavity or depression a, and mounted in the cavity or depression a is a long spiral spring B, one end of which is passed through asmall perforation or passage a? into the neck of the bottle, and we also provide a narrow strip or plate D of sheet metal, the upper end of which is provided with ahook, and said plate or strip D is provided on its inner sidewith inwardly and downwardly directed teeth or sprockets d through which the end b of the spring B is passed, and the end I) of the spring B is passed around and secured to the strip or plate D, as shown at W.

A shield G, composed of glass, porcelain,- or similar material, is placed over the spring B and the cavity or depression a and is sealed thereto in any desired manner, and when the bottle or vessel has been filled with the desired contents an ordinary plug or stopper is forced into the neck A. tend below the opening or perforation a and when the bottle has been thus filled and sealed the plug or stopper cannot be with drawn without pulling out through the neck the spring B, which unooils as the plug or stopper is withdrawn, and this pulling out of the spring B will be proof that the bottle or sim1ilar vessel has been once filled and emptiec.

WVhen the plug or stopper has been forced into the neck of the bottle, the teeth or sprockets d are forced thereinto, and thus prevent a removal of the plug or stopper without pulling out the spring, and it will thus be seen that we accomplish the object of ourinvention by means of a device which is simple in construction and operation and which does not materially add to the cost of manufacture.

A bottle or other vessel, provided with a neck in the outer wall of which is formed a cavity or depression a spiral spring placed within said depression and one end of which is passed through a perforation or opening in the side of the neck, and a strip or plate provided with a hook, by which it is suspended within said neck, said strip or plate being provided with teeth or sprockets, through which the end of the spring is passed, said teeth being inwardly and downwardly directed and being adapted to engage with the plug or stopper, when the latter is forced into the neck, substantially as shown and described.

A bottle or other vessel provided with a neck in the outer wall of which is formed acavity or depression a spiral spring placed within said depression, and one end of which is passed through a perforation or opening in the side of the neck, and a strip or plate pro vided with teeth or sprockets, through which the end of the spring is passed, said teeth being inwardly and downwardly directed and being adapted to engage with the plug or stopper, when the latter is forced into the neck and said cavity being provided with a shield of glass or similar material which is secured thereover, substantially as shown and described.
