To (I/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL F. OLEARY, a citizen of the United States, residing at St.
Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bottles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to bottles; and its object is to provide means for closing the neck of a bottle whereby the content-s of the same cannot be removed without destroying the closing device and rendering it apparent that the original package has been tampered with.
My invention consists, generally stated, in the novel arrangement,construction,and com bination of the various parts of the device, as will be hereinafter more specifically set forth and described, and particularly pointed out in the claims' To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will describe the same more fully, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a side view of a portion of a bottle, showing my invention applied to the neck thereof. Fig. 2 is a cross-section thereof on the line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a top view of the same. Fig. 4: is a view of the plug removed. Fig. 5 is a side view of the neck of a bottle, showing another form of my invention before the cement is inserted around the plug; and Fig. 6 is a cross-section on the line 6 6, Fig. 5, showing the plug secured in place.

The bottle Ais provided with the ordinary body portion (L and the neck portion Z) for the reception of the cork c therein. The neck portion 1) is preferably provided with a thickened rim d around the top edge d thereof, and within the body (Z of the same are formed the holes or seats 6. The seats 6 are formed on each side of the rim (Z and opposite each other and extend down from the top edge 01' thereof within the body 61 for some distance. A frangible plugf, formed of glass or metal and having the body portion f, is placed across the top edge 61 and cork c of the bottle A and is provided with the downwardlyprojecting arms g, which are formed as part of the plug f and at right angles to the body portion f and are adapted to be inserted into the seats 6. The arms g are preferably formed d circular in cross-section and tapered from the body portion f to and narrowing toward the ends thereof, so as to almost close the openings or seats 6 at the top. Cement or other sealing material it is then poured into the seatse around the arms g to secure the same. The frangible plugfis made thinner at the point where the body portion f joins the arms g, as atf so that it may be easily fractured at that point when desired, and enlargements g are preferably formed on the ends of the arms gin order to prevent the possible'removalof the plugf from the cement in which they are embedded.
In the use and operation of my improved bottle A the contents are first placed within the bottle and the cork c inserted within the neck I) to close the same, after which the frangible plugf is placed in position, with its arms g inserted within the seats e. The sealing material his then placed within the seats and around the arms gand their enlarged retaining-heads g, so securing the plug in place. In Figs. 5 and 6 I have shown another form of my improvement in which the seats e are formed in the outer face 61 of the rim (1 instead of within the body d thereof, as above described, said seats 6 being formed on an incline and tapering inwardly toward the top edge 02, as at e, in order to hold the arms 9 more securely therein.
It will thus be seen that myimproved bottle is cheap and simple in its construction andthe contents cannot be removed without mutilating the closing device, which would show that the bottle had been tampered with and the integrity of the original package destroyed.
Various modifications in the construction, arrangement, design, and shape of the various parts of the device may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A non-refillable bottle having a body portion, a neck extending upwardly from the body portion, said neck having recesses extending downwardly therein from the surface thereof, the recesses being situate at-diametrically opposite points of said neck and being open only at the top; in combination with a frangible seal having a main body portion extending across the neck and a cork placed therein and arms projecting downwardly therefrom at substantially right angles thereto and extending to the bottoms of said recesses, said arms being provided at their lower ends with enlarged portions to prevent withdrawal thereof and being weakened at their upper portion for easy fracture; and a cementing material placed in said recesses and surrounding said arms and their enlarged heads.
2. A non-refillable bottle having a body portion, a neck extending upwardly from the body portion, said neck having recesses ex.- tending downwardly therein from the top surface thereof and flaring outwardly so as to form a wedge shape, the recesses being.situeeaoss ate at diametrically opposite points of said neck and being open at the top and the outer side thereof; in combination with a frangible seal having a main body portion extending across the neck and the cork therein, and arms projecting downwardly therefrom at substantially right angles thereto and extending to the bottoms of said recesses, said arms being provided at their lower ends with enlarged portions to prevent withdrawal thereof; and a cementing material placed in said recesses and surrounding said arms and their enlarged heads; the tapering form of the recesses forming the cementing material into a wedge to prevent withdrawal of the same from the heck.
