P.'S.MO0RE. MINERS GANDLESTICK.
Patented Mar. 15, 1898.v
'IIIIIIIZZZIL @Hiommd STATES PATENT OFFICE,
FRANK s. MOORE, OF PARK CITY, UTAH, ASSIGNOR 'ro FRANK E. WILLIAMS,
on SAME PLACE.
MINERS CANDLESTICK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 600,591, dated March 15, 1898. Application filedMarch 27, 1897. Serial No. 629,601. (No model.)
T0 or whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK S. MOORE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Park City, in the county of Summit, State of Utah, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Miners Oandlesticks,of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to an improvement in miners candlesticks; and the object of the invention is to provide a device the parts of which can readily be taken apart or removed and which is adapted to be applied either to the wall of the mine by being forced into the same or adapted to be hung on a ledge, or, if desired, may be clamped to the drilling-machine. I-Ieretofore it has been proposed to make these candlesticks in various ways, andespecially of a piece or pieces of Wire bent to proper shape and pointed at their opposite ends. The difficulty with this device is that by reason of its size and the sharp projecting points it is difficult to carry and cannot be stored in a very small space, whereas in my device it can be taken apart andcarried in the pocket or in a small box.
The invention consists in the matters hereinafter described, and referred to in the appended claims:
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the invention, Figure l is a top plan view, partly in section, of a miners candlestick constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a detail View of one of the supporting-hooks and the clamping device for securing the candlestick to a mining-machine, and Fig. 4 represents details of some of the parts of the candlestick.
In the drawings, A represents the handle of the candlestick, which is preferably of the form shown and is cast in one piece with a forwardly-projecting lug a, having a socket, within which is placed the shank of a pointed rod, the point of which is adapted to be stuck into some object for giving support to the candlestick. This pointed rod, which I have marked 11, has near its inner end a notchm and is held within the projection a by means of a set-screw b, which passes through the wall of the projection a into the notch 'm. Uponeither side of the base or handle and before the said handle or base narrows to form the lug a are formed lugs 0, having openings through them, in which are secured, by set-screws L, the pointed hooks F, which are adapted to be secured to the hat of the workman or to be hung from a projecting ledge or timber, &c.
WVhen it is desired to attach the candlestick to a mining-machine, such as of the Burleigh or Ingersoll-Sergeant type, I provide a clamping device which I have marked C, comprising two members, one,a fixed member d, being secured by-a set-screw L to the shank of the hook F, while the other member e is pivoted to the fixed member d,and the parts are attachably secured together when passed around the object to which they are to be attached by means of the bolt K.
To properly support the candle, the handle or base A is thickened at one portion and is provided with a suitable socket f, the walls of which receive and hold, keeping from horizontal displacement, the candle I. To form the bottom wall of this socket, I provide upon the handle or base a sliding plate E, enlarged at its outer end sufficiently to cover the bottom of the socket f and having a narrow rearwardly extending shank sliding in a groove in the support G, secured to the handle or base A. Upon the shank of this sliding piece E is a hook J, to which is attached one end of a spiral spring g, fixed at its opposite end to the lug h on the fixed part of the frame, this spring keeping the slide E normally pressed forward, so that the wide part of said slide will lie across the bottom of the socket f and act as a support for the lower end of the candle. If it is desired to let the lower end of the candle project below the plane of the base or handle, the slide can be retracted and the candle put in position, and when the slide is released its forward point i will pass into the candle and prevent it from dropping out.
D represents a downwardly-proj ectin g handle or finger-piece on the slide E, by which it may be retracted, and N is a downwardlyprojecting lug provided with a socket to receive the point i of the said slide E when the latter is in its extended position.
It will be seen that all the projecting parts such as the clamp, the pointed rod I-I,and the hook Fmay be detached from the body of the candlestick and that the entire device may be packed in a small compass.
Various minor modifications and changes in the device may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A miners candlestick, comprisingahandle havinga socket to receive the candle, vertically-apertured lugs at opposite sides of the socket, anda longitudinally apertured or bored lug in front of the socket, and set-screws intersecting the bores or apertures of said three lugs, one or more vertically-disposed hooks the shanks of which are clamped in said vertical apertures, and a longitudinally-extending pointed rod, the shank of which is clamped in said longitudinal bore or socket, substantially as described.
2. Aminers candlestick, comprisinga handle or base having a candle-socket, a suspension or attaching hook or rod, and a clamp having a fixed member provided with a horizontally-disposed jaw at its outer end, a vertical aperture at its inner end to receive the shank of said hook or rod, a set-screw to secure the clamp to said shank, and an adjustable member having a jaw mating with that of the fixed member, substantially as described.
3. A miners candlestick having a suitable base or handle and a sliding plate having a pointed end adapted to engage the candle to be supported and a seat within which said pointed end may be received, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK S. MOORE.
