To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, NELSON BLoUN'r, a citizen of the United States of America, re siding .in the borough of Manhattan, in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Miners Lamps, whereof the fol lowing is a specification.
This invention is especially applicable to miners lamps used in metal mines where safety lamps are not required.
The object of the invention is to provide a lamp with supporting means having a variety of adjustments for holding the lamp in vertical position whether upon the wall, ceiling, post, shelf or any part of the mine.
Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings represents a side elevation of a mine lamp provided with supporting means embodying the preferred form of this invention. Fig. 2 represents a rear elevation thereof, showing in full lines one position of the hook handle, constituting a part of the supporting means and indicating in dotlines and in dash-dot lines two different positions thereof. Fig. 3 represents a horizontal section on line 33 of Fig. 1 of the supporting means and a section of a fragment of the lamp body to which said means are secured.
The same reference numbers indicate corresponding parts in the different figures, round numbers being used to designate the principal elements and intermediate numbers for the subordinate features thereof.
A mine lamp 10, which may be of the acetylene or other type, is provided with a supporting means which has a variety of adjustments. In the form shown this means comprises a fixed bracket 20 secured to the body of the lamp by rivets passing therethrough and through the attaching straps 21 and 22 of said bracket. The bracketis preferably rectangular in form and provided with an outer flat bearing face 25 and with a stud hole or bolt hole 24. This bracket forms a pocket 25 between it and the lamp body. A pivot stud 30 is secured to said bracket. This piyot stud may be of any suitable construction. As shown it consists of a bolt passed through the bolt hole 24 and having a head 31 at its inner end within the pocket 25 and a wing nut 35 at its outer end.
A swiveling clamp 40 is disposed on the stud 30 and held against the bearing face 23 of the bracket 20 by the nut 35. This clamp consists of a folded metallic str'ip comprising jaws 41 and 42 and an open socket 43 at the closed end thereof. A hook handle 50 is held in the socket 43 of the clamp 40 by means of the wing nut 35 and is adjustable in said socket by the same means. This hook handle consists of a straight shank 51 having a sharpened prong 52 at its lower end integral with or in fixed relation to said shank and a hook 53 at its upper end. The short leg of this book 53 is provided with a sharpened prong 54, which is preferably bent outwardly from the shank 51 as shown in Fig. 1 and also laterally with reference to said shank as shown in Fig. 2. The hook handle has a longitudinal or sliding adjustment in the jaws of the clamp, also a rotary adjustment therein, and owing to the swiveling of the clamp the hook handle may be adjusted at various inclines relatively to the lamp. The book handle is locked in or released from any of its positions of adjustment by means of the clamp and ring nut.
In the use of this invention, the lamp is carried by grasping the hook handle which is normally in the position in which it is shown in Fig. 1. For supporting the lamp in vertical position from the sidewall of the mine, the hook handle may be swung into right angular position indicated by dot lines in Fig. 2 and the jabbing prong 52 forced into said sidewall. When it is desired to depend the lamp in vertical position from the ceiling of the mine the hook handle 50 is reversed so that the sharpened prong 52 projects directly upward as shown in clotdash lines in Fig. 2 and "the hook is then driven into the ceiling. If the wall or ceiling to which the hook handle is to be driven be inclined, said hook handle may be swung to any desired angle to accommodate it to such inclined surface while maintaining an uprightposition of the lamp. In case the lamp is to be secured to an upright timber of the mine frame, the bent prong 54 of the hook 53 may be readily pressed or driven into such timber; likewise if the lamp is to be supported from a horizontal or inclined timber, the prong 54 may be pressed or driven thereinto. In case the lamp is to stand on a surface subject to movement or vibration, the clamp is loosened and the shank of the hook handle is adjusted longitudinally so that the straight prong thereof projects below the bottom of the lamp, where it will penetrate such surface and hold the lamp in upright position.
I claim as my invention:
1. The combination of a lamp, a hook handle therefor provided with a sharpened prong in fixed relation thereto, and a con necting means between said lamp and hook handle which permits a plurality of different adjustments of the one relatively to the other.
2. The combination of a lamp, a hook handle therefor provided with a sharpened prong in fixed relation thereto, and connecting means which permits longitudinal, rotary and inclined adjustments of said hook handle with relation to said lamp.
8. The combination of a lamp, a hook handle therefor provided with a sharpened fixed prong, and a clamp engaging said hook handle and having a swiveling adjustment in connection with said lamp.
l. The combination of a lamp, a hook handle therefor comprising a shank providedat one end withasharpened prong and at the other end with a hook, both in fixed relation to said shank, and a connectingfixed relation to said shank, and a connecting means which permits the axial adjustment bodily of said hook handle relatively to said lamp.
6. The combination of a lamp, a hook handle support attached thereto, and a hook handle axially adjustable bodily in said support and provided with a sharpened prong.
7. The combination of a lamp, a hook handle therefor comprising a shank provided at one end with a sharpened prong and at the other end with a hook having a laterally bent sharpened prong, and a connecting means which permits the adjustment of said hook handle relatively to said lamp.
8. The combination of a lamp, a hook handle therefor provided with a sharpened prong in fixed relation thereto, and a connection which I ermits the axial adjustment bodily of saicF handle relatively to said lamp.
9. The combination of a lamp provided with a bracket having an outward bearing face and an outwardly projecting pivot stud, a clamp swiveled on said stud, a hook handle adjustable in said clamp and provided with a sharpened prong, and means on said stud for tightening and releasing said clamp. 1
