MOP HOLDER.
APPLICATION FILED DEC. 7, 1912.

-ROBERII. E. ANDREWS AND GEORGE E. ANDREWS, OF MOUNT GILEAD, NORTH CAROLINA.
MOP-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 7, 191%.
Application filed December 7, 1912. Serial No. 735,557.
To all 1071 om it may concern I Be it known that we, Ronnur E. ANDREWS and Gnonon R. ANDREws, citizens of the United States, residing at Mount Gilead, in the county of Montgomery and State of North Carolina, have invented new and useful Improvements in Mop Holders, of which the following is a Specification.
The present invention has reference to mop holders, and it comprehends an improved device of the character specified which is primarily designed for use in connection with a floor mop and is so constructed as to permit the ready attachment or detachment of the mop, and its retention in position when attached.
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, whereof Figures 1 and 2 are a perspective view and a transverse sectional View, respectively, of the improved holder with the mop in place therein.
As shown in said drawings, the holder consists of inner and outer metal rings 1 and 2 which are so constructed and arranged as to exercise a clamping action between them upon the mop 8, when. the latter has been fitted over the inner ring and moved with the same into the outer ring. This clamping action is preferably obtained by giving to the walls of both rings a slight inward inclination, so that said rings have a somewhat frusto-conical shape, such con struction enabling them to mutually exert a wedging or binding action upon the interposed portion of the mop. The inner ring has a suitable hinge connection with the outer ring to enable it to be swung into and out of operative position, and in the present embodiment of the invention there is provided for this purpose an L-shaped bracket 4 which is attached to the inner ring, as hereinafter described. The vertical arm of said bracket is arranged against the innor surface of said inner ring, and its horizontal arm extends laterally beneath the lower edge of that ring and of the outer rin as well and is turned upwardly at its outer end, as indicated by the numeral 5, over a wire 6, or the like, which is held in place in a bead 7 formed by rolling the lower edge of the outer ring, the. portion of the bead directly opposite the up-turned end or lip 5 being cut away, as will be understood.
Suitable fastening means are provided for retainingthe movable inner ring in operative position in the stationary outer ring,
such means being here shown as comprising a vertical latch bar 8 formed upon its opposite side edges with opposed series of teeth 9. This latch is swiveled at its lower end to the horizontal arm of an inverted l..- shaped bracket 10 which is secured to the inner surface of the inner ring at a. point opposite the hinge bracket- 4, and it passes through a. longitudinal slot 11 formed on the overhanging horizontal arm of a keeper 12 that is constituted by a similarbracket secured to the inner surface of the upper ring, the arrangement obviously permitting the latch to be turned in either direction Lu bring its teeth into, or out of alinement with the aforementioned slot in the keeper bracket. The latch is of sufficient length to enable its upper end portion 13 to serve as a finger-piece or handle for forcing the movable inner ring and the mop into the outer ring until the mop is clamped in place between said rings.
In order to permit the holder to be used with mops of difierent thicknesses. and the inner ring in consequence to be forced into the outer ring to a greater or less extent, the vertical arm of the hinge bracket 4 is formed with a longitudinal slot 14 through which loosely passes the stem of the bolt 15 that connects said bracket to the first-mentioned ring.
The device. is operated in the usual manner by means of a suitable handle 16 which is attached to the stationary outer ring 2 in any desired manner.
We claim 1. A mop holder comprising a pair of co acting clamping rings hinged together, one of which is adapted to swing into and out of position in the other and to carry the mop, and means for retaining the swinging ring in such position.
2. A mop holder comprising co-acting inner and outer clamping members, the fornier of which is adapted to carry the mop, a bracket hinged to the outer member and provided with a longitudinal slot, a connecting bolt between the inner member and said .3 bracket extending loosely through said slot,
a bracket secured to said inner member opposite the first-named bracket, a latch. carried by the second-named bracket, and a keeper secured to said outer member above 10 said second-named bracket for co-action with said -latch.
In testimony whereof We have hereunto set our hands in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
