Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OEETGE.
G. N. STEARNS, OF SYRAOUSE, NEV YORK.
IMPROVED VISE FOR HOLDING SAWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 58,692, dated October 9, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE N. STEARNs,
y of the city of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Vise for the purpose of holding saws while the teeth are being sharpened; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the an nexed drawings, making a part of this speci fication, in which- Figure No. l is a perspective view. Fig. No. 2 is a half-section.
Letters B B are the jaws and main arm of the vise. Letters A A are the arms extending from the jaws of the vise, attached to which is the eccentric-lever, and then bent back and extending back to within about two inches of the jaws of the vise, leaving a space between the said arms for the purpose ot' allowing the saw while in the vise to hang in the space thus left.
The ends of the arms A A are fastened to the main arm B. Also attached to the arms A A are two ears, for the purpose of fastening the vise to any permanent frame while being used.
Letter C is the eccentric-lever, which,in connection with the spring D, opens and closes the jaws of the vise. Letter D is the spring, made of cast-steel, and fastened to the main arm B at one end, the other end extending over and upon the point of connection of the arms AA ,that are fastened to the main arm B.
One of the jaws has two points of bearing, between which points the jawis concave. The lower edge of the upper point"of the jaw is in line with the surface of the lower point of said jaw. The upper edge of said jaw projects slightly forward from a perpendicular line. rlhe other jaw has a surface confor-min g to the jaw first described, and when closed upon the saw springs the saw a little concave, the effect of which is to prevent vibration of the saw while being filed.
I construct myvise of cast-iron or brass, and when it is intended to be used the eccentriclever is pulled down, as shown in the drawings, which loosens and opens the jaws sufticient to admit of the saw,'and when the saw isinserted between the jaws thelever is pushed up, which tightens the jaws on the saw, and the peculiar construction of thatpart of the jaws that presses against the saw springs the saw slightly concave, the effect of which is to prevent vibration, and also prevents the grating sound produced b v the common method of filing saws.
lhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The herein-described vise, as a new article of manufacture, for the purposes set forth.
v G. N. STEAK-NS.
Vi tnesses:
L. F. SMITH, Z. CHAs. Foo'r.
